Last fall, the Fangshan government and China Mobile, the country’s largest mobile operator, outfitted a 6-mile (10-kilometer) road with 5G cell towers. Since September 2018, companies have been using the connectivity to test wireless communications between autonomous vehicles and their surroundings. The 5G network transmits data from car sensors, roadside sensors, and video cameras installed above the road to a local data center, which analyzes the information and sends it back to the vehicles to help them navigate.
How does 5G make this possible? Unlike previous generations of mobile technology, which tended to introduce a single novel feature for users (1G let you walk and talk, 2G let you send texts, 3G got you onto the internet, and 4G let you stream), 5G promises a whole suite of dramatic improvements. It uses entirely new wireless infrastructure to achieve speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G and promises to nearly eliminate any processing delays. It will also kick-start the internet of things, since it was designed to connect billions of machines, appliances, and sensors at low cost without draining their batteries. A "digital ethics" officer and other roles tied to adoption of innovative technologies will be required by banks to ensure the integrity of business processes as they adopt regulatory technology, or "regtech," a senior industry official said last week.
Speaking at a regtech conference sponsored by the American Banker in New York, Yvette Hollingsworth Clark, an executive vice president and regulatory innovation officer at Wells Fargo, said: “The skill sets you will need to support this (innovation) are going to change.”
Foremost in the expanded skills set is an understanding of computer programming.
“Someone who understands ethics will need to understand code,” she said. She cited a “digital ethics officer” as an example of the type of role that’s likely to emerge.
The adoption of machine learning and artificial intelligence in the compliance function will undoubtedly affect jobs, participants at the conference agreed.

Immer mehr Bakterien werden immun gegen die bekannten Antibiotika. Neue Mittel müssen her, die anders wirken als die bisherigen. Forschende der Universität und der ETH Zürich berichten nun von der bisher unbekannten Wirkweise eines Antibiotikums aus einer Baumwanze.
Das natürliche Antibiotikum Thanatin aus einer nordamerikanischen Baumwanze wirkt gegen sogenannte gramnegative Bakterien. Dazu gehören zum Beispiel krankmachende Stämme des Darmbakteriums Escherichia coli. Ein Forschungsteam der Universität und der ETH Zürich hat entschlüsselt, wie genau dieses Antibiotikum die Bakterien eliminiert. Und sind auf einen neuen Wirkmechanismus gestoßen, wie die Universität am Donnerstag mitteilte.
Thanatin blockiert Baustein-Transport
Wie die Forschenden um John A. Robinson von der Uni Zürich im Fachblatt «Science Advances» berichten, verhindert Thanatin den Aufbau der Schutzhülle der Bakterien. Genauer gesagt: der äußeren von zwei übereinanderliegenden Zellmembranen, die die Erreger umgeben. Die äußere Membran hat eine wichtige Abwehrfunktion und verhindert, dass für das Bakterium toxische Substanzen ins Zellinnere gelangen. Web-Erfinder Tim Berners Lee hat zum Auftakt des Web Summit in Lissabon dazu aufgerufen, die “vielen Probleme” des Webs anzugehen. Das freie Internet werde bedroht durch Missbrauch, Desinformation und Kontrollverlust. Das Web brauche also einen Neustart. An die Besucher, die an der Gestaltung des Web mitwirken, appellierte Berners-Lee, die Benutzer wieder mehr in den Fokus zu rücken.
Gemeinsam soll die Gemeinschaft die Probleme der einen Hälfte der Menschheit lösen helfen, etwa Fake News und Datenmissbrauch, und der anderen Hälfte helfen, ins Netz zu kommen. Die Web Foundation, der Berners-Lee vorsteht, ruft die vielen Delegierten und Unternehmer auf dem Web Summit auf, dem neuen Kontrakt für ein besseres Netz unter dem Hashtag #ForTheWeb beizutreten.
Wie ein solches besseres Netz aussehen kann, hatte Berners-Lee bereits vor einem Monat vorgestellt. Tim Berners-Lee ist nicht glücklich mit dem, was aus seiner Erfindung – dem WWW – geworden ist, und sieht es an einem kritischen Punkt angekommen. "Das Web hat sich in einen Motor der Ungleichheit und Spaltung entwickelt", schreibt Berners-Lee und kritisiert diese Entwicklung, hält aber eine Wende zum Besseren für möglich. Saturday update: More than 24 hours after they were released by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft to fly down to the surface of the asteroid Ryugu, the Japanese Space Agency has finally provided an update on the fate of the two tiny robots. And they're doing quite well indeed.
"We are sorry we have kept you waiting!" the space agency, JAXA, tweeted. "MINERVA-II1 consists of two rovers, 1a & 1b. Both rovers are confirmed to have landed on the surface of Ryugu. They are in good condition and have transmitted photos & data. We also confirmed they are moving on the surface." A quantum computer is -- or, perhaps more accurately phrased, would be -- a wholly different order of mechanism than anything the human species has ever constructed. Today, there are working machines that perform some small part of what a full quantum computer may eventually do. Depending upon whom you ask, these are either quantum computing prototypes or "prologues" -- stepping stones toward the real thing.

The goal of quantum computing research is to discover a means of expediting the execution of long waves of instructions. If luck is another word for being at the right place at the right time, you could say we got lucky. Graphcore, the hottest name in AI chips, has been on our radar for a while now, and a discussion with Graphcore's founders was planned well before news about it broke out this week.
Graphcore, as you may have heard by now, just secured another $200 million of funding from BMW, Microsoft, and leading financial investors to deliver the world's most advanced AI chip at scale. Names include the likes of Atomico, Merian Chrysalis, Investment Company Limited, Sofina, and Sequoia. As Graphcore CEO and Founder Nigel Toon shared, Graphcore had to turn down investors for this round, including, originally, the iconic Sequoia fund. The first worldwide drone standards have been unveiled to keep aircraft safe The first ever set of global standards for drones has been launched today, designed to keep aircraft safe and to make sure operators are held accountable. What’s happened: The International Organization for Standardization (IOS) has released a draft set of standards for drone operations for public consultation, open until January 21, 2019. The standards are expected to be adopted worldwide later next year. What does the document say? There’s little to disagree with here. The standards call for “no-fly zones” to ensure sufficient distance from airports or sensitive locations. The document suggests geo-fencing technology to stop flights in restricted areas. It also says there should be flight logging, training, and maintenance requirements. There are rules to ensure that operators respect privacy and data protection. Crucially, it also says a fail-safe means of human intervention is mandatory for all drone flights, establishing accountability for drone operators. Why is it needed? Agreeing to a consistent set of industry regulations should encourage more organizations to adopt drone technology, thanks to stronger assurances on safety and security. In the Financial Times today, the head of the UK’s air safety board said that half of air traffic incidents now involve drones. Alastair Muir of NATS, the British air traffic control service, called for more technology to combat the threat. Better standards should help, too. Blockchain smart contracts can finally have a real world impact
A startup says it has tackled a long-standing problem that has kept smart contracts from responding to events in the outside world.
You have probably heard that blockchain technology and "smart contracts" are going to revolutionize our lives.
But there’s a problem: before smart contracts can do anything really useful, they need a reliable way to connect with events in the real world—and that has proved impossible so far. This is the so-called "oracle problem," a technological challenge that is still hampering any chance that blockchain will break out and become a part of our everyday lives.
Until now, perhaps. A startup called Chainlink is combining its software with a trusted hardware system called Town Crier, developed by a leading academic cryptocurrency research group. Together, they might be closer than ever to solving the problem.
Smart contracts are computer programs stored in a blockchain. They can be used to automate the unstoppable transfer of crypto-tokens between users, according to agreed-upon conditions. “Oracles” are real-time data feeds that deliver things like weather data, currency exchange rates, airline flight information, and sports statistics to smart contracts.
The idea is that by working together, the two systems can allow blockchain-based services to interact with real-world events with a greater degree of trust than is possible from today’s oracle services. For example, if your flight is canceled but you bought flight insurance, a smart contract might instantaneously pay you after getting an update from a trusted source of flight times.

Colonoscopy () or coloscopy () is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. It can provide a visual diagnosis (e.g., ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected colorectal cancer lesions.
Colonoscopy (/ˌkɒləˈnɒskəpi/) or coloscopy (/kəˈlɒskəpi/)[1] is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. It can provide a visual diagnosis (e.g., ulceration, polyps) and grants the opportunity for biopsy or removal of suspected colorectal cancer lesions. Colonoscopy can remove polyps as small as one millimetre or less. Once polyps are removed, they can be studied with the aid of a microscope to determine if they are precancerous or not. It can take up to 15 years for a polyp to turn cancerous.
Colonoscopy is similar to sigmoidoscopy—the difference being related to which parts of the colon each can examine. A colonoscopy allows an examination of the entire colon (1200–1500 mm in length). A sigmoidoscopy allows an examination of the distal portion (about 600 mm) of the colon, which may be sufficient because benefits to cancer survival of colonoscopy have been limited to the detection of lesions in the distal portion of the colon.[2][3][4]
A sigmoidoscopy is often used as a screening procedure for a full colonoscopy, often done in conjunction with a fecal occult blood test (FOBT). About 5% of these screened patients are referred to colonoscopy.[5]
Virtual colonoscopy, which uses 2D and 3D imagery reconstructed from computed tomography (CT) scans or from nuclear magnetic resonance (MR) scans, is also possible, as a totally non-invasive medical test, although it is not standard and still under investigation regarding its diagnostic abilities. Furthermore, virtual colonoscopy does not allow for therapeutic maneuvers such as polyp/tumour removal or biopsy nor visualization of lesions smaller than 5 millimeters. If a growth or polyp is detected using CT colonography, a standard colonoscopy would still need to be performed. Additionally, surgeons have lately been using the term pouchoscopy to refer to a colonoscopy of the ileo-anal pouch. Banken und Versicherer werden oftmals als erbitterte Widersacher der Fintech-Branche dargestellt. Gefährden die Jungunternehmen mit ihren innovativen Technologien doch oftmals die Geschäftsmodelle der etablierten Player. Wie nun allerdings aus dem Fintech-Kooperationsradar von PwC hervorgeht, arbeiten viele Banken und Versicherer eng mit Finanz-Start-ups zusammen.
Diese Banken und Versicherer arbeiten besonders häufig mit Fintechs und Insurtechs zusammen.

Besonders aktiv zeigen sich die Commerzbank mit 73 eingegangenen Kooperationen, die Munich Re mit 67, die Deutsche Bank mit 58 und die Allianz mit 54. Auf die Bankenbranche entfallen laut der Untersuchung insgesamt rund zwei Drittel der Bündnisse, auf die Versicherer ein Drittel.
„Die etablierten Player haben genauso wie die Start-ups erkannt, dass sie den größten Erfolg erzielen, wenn beide Seiten miteinander statt gegeneinander arbeiten“, kommentiert Sascha Demgensky, Leader Fintech bei PwC, die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung. Que l'on se rassure : les données personnelles individuelles des ressortissants européens sont protégées par le Règlement général de protection des données (RPGD). Mais quid des données à caractère non personnel, celles-là mêmes dont l'ouverture en open data permettrait par exemple à la médecine de réaliser un bond considérable grâce à l'intelligence artificielle ? La barrière sera bientôt levée : le Parlement européen a donné, le 4 octobre 2018, son feu vert à un projet de règlement instaurant une libre circulation des données à caractère non personnel, un texte déjà négocié avec les États et qui devrait entrer en vigueur d'ici deux ans. Le texte doit auparavant être formellement adopté par le conseil des ministres.
Les données non personnelles pourront voyager d'un État à l'autre, sauf raisons de sécurité nationale
La nouvelle réglementation interdira à un Etat d'imposer le stockage et le traitement de données numériques sur son territoire ou un autre territoire donné de l'Union européenne (UE), sauf raisons de sécurité nationale ou s'il s'agit de données à caractère personnel et non personnel non dissociables. Dans ce dernier cas, ce sera alors le RGPD, applicable depuis le 25 mai 2018 dans l'UE, qui prévaudra. Reuters - Apple Inc has acquired a startup focused on making lenses for augmented reality glasses, the company confirmed on Wednesday, a signal Apple has ambitions to make a wearable device that would superimpose digital information on the real world.

Apple confirmed it acquired Longmont, Colorado-based Akonia Holographics. “Apple buys smaller companies from time to time, and we generally don’t discuss our purpose or plans,” the iPhone maker said in a statement.
Akonia could not immediately be reached for comment. The company was founded in 2012 by a group of holography scientists and had originally focused on holographic data storage before shifting its efforts to creating displays for augmented reality glasses, according to its website.
In augmented reality, digital information is overlaid on the real world as in the popular game Pokemon Go. Mobile phones use their camera system to do this on the phone’s screen, but major technology firms are racing to create glasses that will show digital information on transparent lenses.
Akonia said its display technology allows for “thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images.” The firm has a portfolio of more than 200 patents related to holographic systems and materials, according to its website. The PodRide is a four-wheeled, electric bike that's perfect for winter bike rides or off-roading. The fabric shell keeps the rider both safe and warm during harsh weather. It even comes with headlights, windshield, wipers, and a small storage compartment. The designer built the bike so he had a ride he could use all year long.
