The electric version of Atlas will be stronger, with a broader range of motion than any of our previous generations. For example, our last generation hydraulic Atlas (HD Atlas) could already lift and maneuver a wide variety of heavy, irregular objects; we are continuing to build on those existing capabilities and are exploring several new gripper variations to meet a diverse set of expected manipulation needs in customer environments.

Boston Dynamics could be set to change hands once again, according to a new report from Bloomberg that cited “people familiar with the matter.”

The deal would make Korean automaker Hyundai the third company in seven years to own the robotics firm, following sales to Google and SoftBank Group. Boston Dynamics is well known inside and out the industry for making some of the most advanced robotics systems on the planet, including BigDog and the humanoid Atlas.

Boston Dynamics, the company voted most likely to spawn the Robopocalypse, has released a pair of new videos showcasing the latest abilities of its synthetic creations.

A freakishly realistic humanoid robot running effortlessly through grassy fields and managing challenging terrain. A dog-like machine autonomously navigating the complex maze of an office and lab facility. What could possibly go wrong?

From previous videos, we know that the humanoid robot Atlas is capable of some incredible physical feats, such as stacking boxes, performing backflips, and occasionally providing some needed comic relief. Up until this point, however, we’ve never seen this bipedal machine do its work outside.

It’s nice to see that Boston Dynamics has continued its ground-breaking robotics research after Alphabet (Google) sold the lab to Japan’s Softbank last year, but why does every video it releases serve to make us more anxious about the future?

A giant robo-dog that helps out around the house sounds like a dream come true. But I can’t imagine much good coming from one that can open the front door with a clever manipulation of its gripping arm and legs.

Hey, remember those deeply unsettling robot dogs that have been creeping out the internet for years and recently went into production? The company that makes them is called Boston Dynamics, and according to a report published Wednesday by The Korea Economic Daily, it just got bought by Hyundai for around $921 million.

Yes, the very same Hyundai that's hammering out eye-catching and affordable automobiles for you to buy will now be getting deeper into the robot business with an eye on future mobility. Does this mean we'll get self-driving cars sooner, or will we get a robot to help us pedal our tandem bikes? Who knows?

Der US-Roboterspezialist Boston Dynamics hat seinen zweibeinigen, autonomen Roboter Atlas weiter entwickelt. Der Roboter kann sich nun auch im Freien selbstständig bewegen und dort autonom seinen Weg finden. Atlas ähnelt vom äußern Aufbau her einem Menschen. Wenn man ihn dann wie auf diesem Youtube-Video durch einen Park beziehungsweise Garten joggen sieht, könnte man glatt glauben, dass sich ein menschlicher Jogger als Roboter verkleidet habe.

Sand Flea is an 11-lb robot with one trick up its sleeve: Normally it drives like an RC car, but when it needs to it can jump 30 feet into the air. An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings. We haven’t seen much of ATLAS since Google sold Boston Dynamics to Softbank, aside from a few bloopers that gave humanity a false sense of superiority. But this brief one-minute video shows the robot jumping on and off platforms, spinning in the air, and performing a perfect backflip.

A BACKFLIP! That’s the kind of thing you only see robots doing in the movies, but it’s apparently now our sobering reality.
