China's Fusion Reactor Sets World Record by Running for 101 Seconds

China's Fusion Reactor Sets World Record by Running for 101 Seconds | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Fusion reactors like China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) could be the solution to humanity’s energy woes. By harnessing the fusion power of the sun, scientists hope we can generate clean, abundant energy on Earth, but progress over the decades has been slow. Chinese state media has reported that EAST has taken a big step toward making fusion power a reality by keeping plasma at 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds. That’s a new world record, but EAST still doesn’t produce usable power.

Unheimliche Terrakotta-Armee gibt ihre Geheimisse frei - weitere 200 Soldaten entdeckt | #History #China #Archaeology | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

The Quantum Internet is just a decade away. Here's what you need to know | #Research #QuantumComputing #ICT  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Following what Einstein called “spooky action at a distance,” entangled particles exist in a special state that allows information carried in one to be instantaneously reflected in another — a sort of quantum teleportation.

Researchers have recently made significant progress in building this quantum communication network. China launched the world’s first quantum communication satellite last year, and they’ve since been busy testing and extending the limitations of sending entangled photons from space to ground stations on Earth and then back again. They’ve also managed to store information using quantum memory. By the end of August, the nation plans to have a working quantum communication network to boost the Beijing-Shanghai internet.

Leading these efforts is Jian-Wei Pan of the University of Science and Technology of China, and he expects that a global quantum network could exist by 2030. That means a quantum internet is just 13 years away, if all goes well.

Chinese Scientists Claim Breakthrough in Quantum Computing Race | #Research

Chinese Scientists Claim Breakthrough in Quantum Computing Race | #Research | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Chinese scientists claim to have built a quantum computer that is able to perform certain computations nearly 100 trillion times faster than the world’s most advanced supercomputer, representing the first milestone in the country’s efforts to develop the technology.

The researchers have built a quantum computer prototype that is able to detect up to 76 photons through Gaussian boson sampling, a standard simulation algorithm, the state-run Xinhua news agency said, citing research published in Science magazine. That’s exponentially faster than existing supercomputers.

The next generation of wireless technology promises much faster speeds while using less power. No wonder Beijing is throwing everything at getting there first.
by Elizabeth Woyke December 18, 2018

The Fangshan district is a quiet outer borough in southwest Beijing. Until recently it was best known for its petrochemical and steel plants. Today, this neighborhood of sleepy apartment buildings and train tracks is part of a mobile revolution enveloping cities across China: the world’s biggest rollout of 5G technology.

Last fall, the Fangshan government and China Mobile, the country’s largest mobile operator, outfitted a 6-mile (10-kilometer) road with 5G cell towers. Since September 2018, companies have been using the connectivity to test wireless communications between autonomous vehicles and their surroundings. The 5G network transmits data from car sensors, roadside sensors, and video cameras installed above the road to a local data center, which analyzes the information and sends it back to the vehicles to help them navigate.

How does 5G make this possible? Unlike previous generations of mobile technology, which tended to introduce a single novel feature for users (1G let you walk and talk, 2G let you send texts, 3G got you onto the internet, and 4G let you stream), 5G promises a whole suite of dramatic improvements. It uses entirely new wireless infrastructure to achieve speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G and promises to nearly eliminate any processing delays. It will also kick-start the internet of things, since it was designed to connect billions of machines, appliances, and sensors at low cost without draining their batteries.

China and Europe's 'Moon village' could boost lunar mining, space tourism | #Space | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Chinese and European space agencies have come together to consider the possibility of a new joint base on the Moon.

Representatives from both groups, China's space agency and the European Space Agency (ESA) have begun discussing collaborative projects including the moonbase alongside other joint schemes, and as China continues to grow in the space exploration arena, a human outpost could benefit both parties.

La Chine lance un satellite « quantique », une première mondiale | #Research #Cryptography #QuantumComputing | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
