Microsoft is working on a cloud-based Windows

Microsoft is working on a cloud-based Windows | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

“The cloud” was a big tech buzzword about a decade ago. Everything would be accessible everywhere. And that more or less happened — with a little prep work and a decent connection, you can access pretty much anything from anywhere, from your resume .doc file to a collection of movies to full streaming PC games. But, according to recently revealed information, Microsoft is looking into streaming all of Windows to client PCs from cloud-based servers.

Google buys Looker for $2.6 billion, aims to extend its analytics reach, support multiple clouds | #Acquisitions | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Google announced this morning its intent to acquire business intelligence platform Looker for $2.6 billion in an all-cash deal. Google plans to add this to the services portfolio of the Google Cloud platform, providing the last mile link into BigQuery.

While Google has carved out a reputation for machine learning and AI, the acquisition of Looker is intended to broaden its portfolio in business intelligence. The acquisition of Looker follows the recent acquisition of Alooma, which adds ETL tools, and the earlier acquisition of Cask Data, which has resulted in the Google Cloud Data Fusion data pipelining tool.

Alibaba puts quantum computing in the public cloud, follows Intel and IBM's lead | #ICT #Innovation | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Alibaba has just announced an 11 qubit quantum computer as part of its cloud offerings, making it the second-fastest public quantum computing platform in the world.

Alibaba has announced the launch of quantum computing for its cloud customers. The company is hosting an 11-qubit quantum computer, the second fastest cloud-hosted quantum machine available.

Quantum computing as a cloud service is new—only IBM, in partnership with Intel, offers this type of product. Whether it will be successful, practical, or lead to greater quantum computing innovation remains to be seen.

This quantum computer with a 3D chip is heading into the cloud | #QuantumComputing #OxfordQuantumCircuits (#OQC) #StartUPs  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

A startup in the UK is now offering cloud-based access to its own superconducting quantum computer – but with a twist that it hopes could one day help it compete against the processors developed by quantum giants such as IBM and Google.

Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), a startup that spun out of the University of Oxford, is approaching superconducting quantum computing slightly differently. Leading superconducting quantum systems are typically built in a two-dimensional plane, with each qubit acting like a unit cell that requires intricate wiring for controls and measurements. Increasing the number of qubits means increasing the amount of wiring – and on a 2D plane, this comes with a higher risk of creating environmental noise that can damage the quality of the system.

Instead, OQC's researchers use a three-dimensional architecture that moves the control and measurement wiring out of plane. With key componentry off-chip, says OQC, the superconducting quantum processor is a more flexible and engineerable system.

Microsoft buys cloud-migration specialist Movere | #Acquisitions

Microsoft buys cloud-migration specialist Movere | #Acquisitions | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Microsoft has acquired cloud-migration provider Movere for an undisclosed amount. Movere, formerly known as Unified Logic, was founded in 2008 and is based in Bellevue, Wash.

According to Microsoft's September 4 blog post about the acquisition, Movere will fit in with Microsoft's strategy to migrate existing applications and infrastructure to Azure. The company's discovery and assessment capabilities "will complement Azure Migrate and our integrated partner solutions, making migration an easier process for our customers," said Jeremy Winter, partner director of Azure Management, in that blog post.

Movere officials describe the company as a software as a service (SaaS) platform "that increases business intelligence by accurately presenting entire IT environments within a single day, providing enterprises with the confidence they need to have visibility and control of their environments regardless of platform, application or geography as organizations grow, change and digitally optimize."

Google acquires cloud migration platform Alooma
Frederic Lardinois@fredericl / 3 hours ago

Google today announced its intention to acquire Alooma, a company that allows enterprises to combine all of their data sources into services like Google’s BigQuery, Amazon’s Redshift, Snowflake and Azure. The promise of Alooma is that it handles the data pipelines and manages them for its users. In addition to this data integration service, though, Alooma also helps with migrating to the cloud, cleaning up this data and then using it for AI and machine learning use cases.

“Here at Google Cloud, we’re committed to helping enterprise customers easily and securely migrate their data to our platform,” Google VP of engineering Amit Ganesh and Google Cloud Platform director of product management Dominic Preuss write today. “The addition of Alooma, subject to closing conditions, is a natural fit that allows us to offer customers a streamlined, automated migration experience to Google Cloud, and give them access to our full range of database services, from managed open source database offerings to solutions like Cloud Spanner and Cloud Bigtable.
