Web-Erfinder Tim Berners Lee hat zum Auftakt des Web Summit in Lissabon dazu aufgerufen, die “vielen Probleme” des Webs anzugehen. Das freie Internet werde bedroht durch Missbrauch, Desinformation und Kontrollverlust. Das Web brauche also einen Neustart. An die Besucher, die an der Gestaltung des Web mitwirken, appellierte Berners-Lee, die Benutzer wieder mehr in den Fokus zu rücken.

Gemeinsam soll die Gemeinschaft die Probleme der einen Hälfte der Menschheit lösen helfen, etwa Fake News und Datenmissbrauch, und der anderen Hälfte helfen, ins Netz zu kommen. Die Web Foundation, der Berners-Lee vorsteht, ruft die vielen Delegierten und Unternehmer auf dem Web Summit auf, dem neuen Kontrakt für ein besseres Netz unter dem Hashtag #ForTheWeb beizutreten.

Wie ein solches besseres Netz aussehen kann, hatte Berners-Lee bereits vor einem Monat vorgestellt. Die von ihm mitgegründete Firma Inrupt hat die Plattform Solid gegründet, die jedermann vollständige Kontrolle über seine Daten geben soll.

The plan to 3D-print a bridge in mid-air was always bonkers. How could a technology best known for creating flimsy prototypes and personalized action figures be used for permanent construction projects? Well, the team at MX3D in Amsterdam just answered all of the hard questions and revealed it: the world’s first 3D-printed bridge. It’s made of a completely new type of steel, spans 40 feet, and will be installed early next year in De Wallen, the largest and best-known red-light district in Amsterdam. It also looks utterly otherworldly.

Developed by Airbus in partnership with IBM, the Crew Interactive MObile CompanioN (CIMON, for short) weighs eleven pounds and will act as a kind of floating brain to assist astronauts during mundane mission duties.

Roughly the size of a basketball, the 3D-printed plastic and metal orb weighs 11-pounds on earth and runs a modified version of IBM's Watson.

Astronaut Alexander Gerst has been designated to test the device. During mission tasks aboard the ISS, Gerst will view procedures on CIMON's screen.

As the astronaut advances through the steps of the tasks, CIMON will track his progress and make suggestions on how best to proceed.

Like tabletop assistants, CIMON recognizes speech, has a synthetic voice, and is capable of some interaction. It's been trained to identify Gerst via facial and speech recognition.

IBM stellte auf seiner Hausmesse „Think 2018“ mit dem Crypto-Anchor den kleinsten Computer der Welt vor. Er ist kleiner als ein grobes Salzkorn. Damit unterbietet er den Michigan Micro Mote, der rund doppelt so viel Platz benötigt. Vorerst nur ein Protoyp, soll der Crypto-Anchor künftig als Edge-Gerät an Produkten zum Einsatz kommen, etwa zur Echtheitsprüfung von Medikamenten.

IBMs Crypto-Anchor hat eine Größe von 1 x 1 Millimeter. Das große Bild auf der linken Seite zeigt übrigens nicht nur einen Mini-Computer – auf dem Chip, der auf der Fingerkuppe liegt, be­finden sich vielmehr 64 Stück davon. Der Prozessor des Kleinstrechners verfügt über rund eine Million Transistoren. Das entspricht in etwa der Zahl an Tran­sistoren früherer 486er-Prozessoren von Intel. Die Datenübertragung erfolgt über eine LED. Ein lichtempfind­licher Sensor empfängt Daten von außen. Der Crypto-Anchor verfügt über eine integrierte Solarzelle. Sie ermöglicht einen komplett autarken Betrieb des Edge-Geräts. Das Edge-Gerät soll als „kryptografischer Anker“ Lieferketten überwachen oder Produktinformationen speichern. Für die Authentifizierung und Prüfung der Daten setzt IBM auf eine Blockchain.

Japanese engineers unveiled on Wednesday (April 25) a robot that transforms into a car that can actually carry people on board, in what they said was the first-ever such accomplishment in the history of robots.

The 3.7-metre (12.1-feet)-tall two-seater robot "J-deite RIDE" can transform into a sportscar in a process that takes about a minute. It can technically walk at 30 km/h (18.6 mph) or run on its four wheels but developers said they've never really tested it outside the factory cargo bay area.

CEO of Brave Robotics, Kenji Ishida, who initiated the co-project with Asratec, an affiliate of the Japanese mobile phone giant SoftBank, and a roller coaster manufacturer Sansei Technologies, said he was motivated by his childhood transformer heroes in anime movies.

While admitting that it may seem like an expensive toy, Ishida said the robot is an attempt to inspire others and broaden the human imagination. Developers said they will begin with utilizing the technology in entertainment industry, such as amusement park and street parades.

Lufttaxis sind kleine Fluggeräte, die einen oder zwei Passagiere über eine kürzere Strecke in der Stadt oder von der Stadt zum Flughafen befördern sollen. Sie sollen autonom fliegen, das bedeutet, der Fluggast braucht keine Fluglizenz.

Die Idee ist, auf diese Weise die Staus auf den Straßen zu umgehen. "Das macht schon Sinn. Wenn ich von Zuffenhausen zum Stuttgarter Flughafen fahre, brauche ich mindestens eine halbe Stunde, wenn ich Glück habe. Mit dem Flieger wären es dreieinhalb Minuten", sagte Platen.

Porsche tritt mit seinem Lufttaxi gegen eine Reihe von Konkurrenten an, die bereits solche Fluggeräte gebaut haben, darunter die deutschen Unternehmen Volocopter und Lilium, der europäische Luftfahrtkonzern Airbus und das chinesische Unternehmen Ehang.

Strictly speaking, video isn’t an interactive medium, but a new research project from MIT aims to change that: The school’s CSAIL lab has come up with a technique through which viewers can reach out and “touch” objects in videos, manipulating them directly to achieve effects similar to what you’d expect if you were actually touching the object live in the real world.

Basically, that means that using this technique, if you were watching a YouTube video of someone playing guitar and it zoomed in tight on the fretboard, you could theoretically use your mouse to drag across the strings and watch them vibrate as if you’d strummed them in real life. Or, you could even load test an old covered bridge by applying virtual stressors like simulated wind, or a truck rumbling across.

The new CSAIL model works by analyzing vibrations given off by every object, as captured using traditional cameras shooting video that is then analyzed by algorithms developed by the research team. These vibrations, when analyzed by the new technique from as little as five seconds of video of a given object, then provide realistic prediction models that anticipate how the object will react to other movement or forces acting upon them.

Design students Anna and Terese took on a giant challenge as an exam project. Something no one had done before. If they could swing it, it would for sure be revolutionary. The bicycle is a tool to change the world.
