Bing AI is now open to all—sort of. Three months after debuting its revamped search engine, Microsoft has announced that it's now moving into open preview. You'll still need to sign into Bing on the Edge browser (or the Bing mobile apps) to use the chatbot, but at least you no longer have to deal with a waitlist.
As if to celebrate this new phase of Bing (powered by OpenAI's GPT-4), Microsoft is also rolling out several new features. For one, it can go beyond mere text responses to deliver charts, graphs and rich formatting. The Bing Image Creator, which taps into DALL-E to craft AI-generated pictures, also now supports the more than 100 languages that Bing's standard search offers.

Microsoft will add contextual searches to Bing, powered by its own version of the ChatGPT algorithm. Microsoft will also integrate a separate, dedicated chat interface for Bing, complete with footnoted links. Finally, AI will be integrated into Edge, allowing to summarize a financial earnings report, for example. Bing’s new search engine interface is live, but to a limited number of people. It will expand in the coming weeks.

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Acquisitions

Microsoft might have failed to get a piece of TikTok during the recent scramble for a US partner, but it just secured a much more valuable prize: ZeniMax. The company has agreed to pay $7.5 billion in cash to buy the game publisher, which comes with Bethesda Softworks and its raft of popular game franchises like Doom, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls (pictured, top). You might want to reevaluate your next-gen console decisions.
Bethesda is the biggest name included in the deal, but it’s not the only jewel in the ZeniMax crown. Microsoft will also snag id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. This isn’t the first time Microsoft has spent big to acquire a developer at the top of its game. In 2014, Microsoft spent $2.5 billion on Mojang developer Minecraft. Microsoft has also managed not to ruin Minecraft after six years, so that gives us some hope. “The cloud” was a big tech buzzword about a decade ago. Everything would be accessible everywhere. And that more or less happened — with a little prep work and a decent connection, you can access pretty much anything from anywhere, from your resume .doc file to a collection of movies to full streaming PC games. But, according to recently revealed information, Microsoft is looking into streaming all of Windows to client PCs from cloud-based servers. On Thursday, Microsoft researchers announced a new text-to-speech AI model called VALL-E that can closely simulate a person's voice when given a three-second audio sample. Once it learns a specific voice, VALL-E can synthesize audio of that person saying anything—and do it in a way that attempts to preserve the speaker's emotional tone.
Its creators speculate that VALL-E could be used for high-quality text-to-speech applications, speech editing where a recording of a person could be edited and changed from a text transcript (making them say something they originally didn't), and audio content creation when combined with other generative AI models like GPT-3. Microsoft agreed on Tuesday to buy Activision Blizzard, the video game maker behind hits like Call of Duty and Candy Crush, for $68.7 billion in cash. It is the largest takeover in Microsoft’s 46-year history and a big bet on its future direction.
The deal plants Microsoft’s flag in the emerging battle for dominance in the so-called metaverse, the next-generation internet that melds the traditional online world with virtual and augmented reality.
It is also a challenge to regulators in Washington, as Democrats and Republicans alike have pushed to limit the power of technology giants. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Acquisitions

Meta (the company formerly known as Facebook) is not the only one trying to carve out a position for itself as a metaverse-savvy company. Microsoft is in this space, too -- coming at it from a more enterprise-centric perspective. At the Microsoft Ignite IT pro conference this week, officials are beating the metaverse drum by announcing more details around Microsoft's plans to bring Mesh to its Teams collaboration platform.
At its Build developers conference in May, Microsoft introduced its Mesh mixed-reality collaboration platform powered by Azure. At that time, officials said Microsoft would be bringing Mesh to Teams. Today, Microsoft officials said Mesh for Teams will begin rolling out in preview in 2022 with a set of pre-built immersive spaces for things like meetings and social mixers. Over time, Microsoft will add tools to allow customers to build their own custom spaces.
Microsoft is describing Mesh for Teams as a feature of Teams that will "combine the mixed-reality capabilities of Microsoft Mesh, which allows people in different physical locations to join collaborative and shared holographic experiences, with the productivity tools of Teams, where people can join virtual meetings, send chats, collaborate on shared documents, and more."
Microsoft is buying AI speech tech firm Nuance for $19.7 billion, bolstering the Redmond, Washington-based tech giant’s prowess in voice recognition and giving it further leverage in the health care market, where Nuance sells many products. Microsoft will pay $56 per share for Nuance, a 23 percent premium over the company’s closing price last Friday.
Nuance is best known for its Dragon software, which uses deep learning to transcribe speech and improves its accuracy over time by adapting to a user’s voice. Nuance has licensed this tech for many services and applications, including, most famously, Apple’s digital assistant Siri. (Though to what degree Siri currently relies on Dragon to answer users’ queries is unclear.) Dragon is an industry leader in terms of transcription accuracy.
The $19.7 billion acquisition of Nuance is Microsoft’s second-largest behind its purchase of LinkedIn in 2016 for $26 billion. It comes at a time when speech tech is improving rapidly, thanks to the deep learning boom in AI, and there are simultaneously more opportunities for its use.
