Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg kicked off the company’s Meta Connect conference today with expected, but still highly anticipated news: The company’s next virtual reality headset will be called the Meta Quest Pro, and will also be the first Quest product to offer a mixed reality experience, bringing the metaverse and the real world together.

As the name implies, the Meta Quest Pro isn’t going to be a replacement for the $400 Meta Quest 2, but a more advanced alternative that’s geared towards productivity and social applications in VR —instead of just fun, games, and unique 360-degree experiences— facilitated through significantly upgraded hardware.

Cela fait plusieurs mois que la prochaine mise à jour majeure de Windows 10 se prépare. Parmi les nouveautés Microsoft met en avant la réalité mixte avec plusieurs partenariats concernant la fabrication des casques mais aussi un réseau social spécialisé dans la réalité augmentée.

A quelques jours de l'arrivée de Windows 10 1709 en version finale Microsoft fait le point sur la réalité mixte sur son blog. L'éditeur décrit les possibilités offertes par la réalité mixte et indique que 20 000 applications relatives à cette technologie seront disponibles dans le Windows Store. Le partenariat qui était pressenti avec Samsung est officialisé, le fabricant proposera son propre casque baptisé Samsung HMD Odyssey.

Since Microsoft Hololens’ launch more than two years ago, developers, partners and customers have embraced mixed reality, pushing the boundaries of technology while creating incredibly immersive and innovative experiences.

In a push to bring the power of Mixed Reality headsets to the masses, Microsoft has since partnered with the world’s largest PC manufacturers to create a series of more affordable headsets, which will arrive later this year.

Unlike existing high-end VR headsets which require external cameras for tracking, Windows Mixed Reality headsets have built-in cameras and sensors to track your physical position and hand-held controllers.

The end result is a headset which requires less hassle setting up, allowing users to easily make use of them anywhere, without the need to set up an area each time they want to play.

Mozilla baut speziellen VR-Browser

Mit Firefox Reality kündigt Mozilla einen auf Immersive Reality spezialisierten Browser an. Er soll in Mixed-Reality-Headsets laufen, also sowohl VR als auch AR unterstützen. Die Technik dafür kommt auch aus dem Servo-Projekt.

Seit etwa eineinhalb Jahren arbeitet Mozilla an der Unterstützung von VR-Technik im Web. Der dafür bei Mozilla zuständige Sean White, Senior Vice President (SVP) Emerging Technologies, hat im vergangenen Herbst im Gespräch mit Golem.de die viele Einsatzmöglichkeiten dieser Technik angepriesen und deutlich gemacht, dass Mozilla hier stark investieren will. Nun kündigt Mozilla mit Firefox Reality eine Browser-Variation an, die für den Einsatz in VR-Headsets gedacht ist.

Microsoft is to update its flagship operating system next month so that the latest generation of Windows 10 hardware devices and software can tap into augmented and virtual reality technologies, executives said on Friday.

Mixed reality is the term Microsoft uses to describe software that covers both augmented and virtual reality.

Augmented reality overlays text, sounds, graphics and video on real-world images that users actually see in front of them, while virtual reality creates entirely computer-generated worlds.

The multimedia content can be viewed on computers, TV displays, smartphones, tablets or, in the case of virtual reality, on dedicated goggles. Microsoft plans to target these features first at advanced video game players using VR headsets, with business applications to follow, officials said.

Microsoft’s push comes as the U.S. tech giants - Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook, along with China’s Baidu - increasingly battle to make augmented reality, together with artificial intelligence and cloud-based services, into the next computer platform.

I poked my head inside NASA's latest Mars rover. During a mixed-reality demonstration at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena...

The ability to investigate the design of NASA's latest spacecraft, which is being engineered for the next mission to Mars in 2020, makes ProtoSpace a unique use for Microsoft's augmented-reality headset. The project enables JPL designers and engineers to not only visualize their designs as virtual 3-D objects, but also pinpoint potential problems that could affect space missions along the way.

Back in Pasadena, ProtoSpace is engaging engineers in a new kind of interaction with their spacecraft design. The vehicle, which is essentially a Computer Assisted Design (CAD) model in holographic form, appears as a floating, dynamic animation. You can do things like slip your arm through the brightly colored parts and bolts that are projected in front of you. But what the rover lacks in definition it makes up for in presence. Unlike the CAD design on a flat computer screen, mixed-reality technology brings a full-scale replica of the rover to life inside a room.
