A 30-year-old man has been killed after being hit by a motorbike while riding his e-scooter on a French motorway.

It is the third death linked to the increasingly popular mode of transport in the Paris region in four months, and has sparked further safety concerns and renewed calls for their regulation.

The accident happened around midnight on Friday on the A86 at Vélizy-Villacoublay, 10km from Versailles to the south-west of central Paris.

The scooter rider was not wearing a helmet and was reportedly travelling in the fast lane when the motorbike hit him from behind. Initial police reports said it was not clear if the scooter had lights.


The motorcyclist suffered multiple injuries and is in a serious condition in hospital. Police found his bike 400 metres from the point of the collision.

Using e-scooters on motorways is banned in France.

Seit Juni sind Elektroscooter in Deutschland zugelassen. Die in zahlreichen Städten zum Verleih angebotenen E-Scooter haben bereits viele Diskussionen ausgelöst: Manche erhoffen sich davon einen Beitrag zur Verkehrswende und nutzen den Roller für den letzten Kilometer, andere ärgern sich über rücksichtslose Fahrer oder achtlos auf dem Gehweg abgestellte Geräte.

Bislang ist umstritten, ob die E-Scooter tatsächlich bei der Verkehrswende helfen und Autofahrer dazu bewegen können, ins Auto zu steigen. Die Umweltfreundlichkeit der Scooter ist hinsichtlich Produktion und Lebensdauer ebenso fraglich, wie die Arbeitsbedingungen derjenigen, die die Roller abends zum Aufladen einsammeln. Ein Überblick über die wichtigsten Punkte:

CO2-Verbrauch: Legt man den deutschen Strommix zugrunde, würden bei einer 100-Kilometer-Strecke auf einem E-Stehroller etwa 0,5 Kilogramm des Treibhausgases CO2 ausgestoßen, sagt Alexander Jung vom Thinktank Agora Verkehrswende. Ein neuer benzinbetriebener Kleinwagen produziere auf der gleichen Strecke gut 11 Kilogramm. Um die gesamte CO2-Bilanz zu berechnen, reiche der Blick auf einzelne Fahrten jedoch nicht aus: Denn auch bei Herstellung und Transport der Roller fallen klimaschädliche Stoffe an.

Schürfwunden, Knochenbrüche, Kopfverletzungen: Mediziner und Unfallexperten rechnen nach der Zulassung von Elektro-Tretrollern in vielen deutschen Städten mit einer Zunahme von Unfällen und teils erheblichen Verletzungen bei Fahrern und anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern. Todesfälle sind aus anderen Ländern bereits bekannt. Aber wie gefährlich sind die kleinen Flitzer wirklich?

"Dass es massive Probleme geben wird zwischen E-Scooter-Fahrern und anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern, liegt auf der Hand. Die Frage ist nur: Wie schwerwiegend sind diese Probleme?", sagt Siegfried Brockmann von der Unfallforschung der Versicherer (UDV). Solange keine Erfahrungen vorlägen, sei es schwierig, diese Frage zu beantworten.

"Wir wissen aus internationalen Studien und Daten, dass das Verletzungspotenzial beim E-Scooter-Fahren sehr hoch ist", sagt Christopher Spering von der Klinik für Unfallchirurgie der Universitätsmedizin Göttingen. "Ich frage mich, ob wir gut genug darauf vorbereitet sind."

Bird boasts that its dockless electric scooters allow customers to “cruise past traffic and cut back on CO2 emissions—one ride at a time.”

Its rival Lime claims the vehicles “reduce dependence on personal automobiles for short distance transportation and leave future generations with a cleaner, healthier planet.”

But the mere fact that battery-powered scooters don’t belch pollution out of a tailpipe doesn’t mean they’re “emissions free,” or as “eco-friendly” as some have assumed. The actual climate impact of the vehicles depends heavily on how they’re made, what they’re replacing, and how long they last.

Researchers at North Carolina State University decided to conduct a “life-cycle assessment” that tallied up the emissions from making, shipping, charging, collecting, and disposing of scooters after one of them noticed that a Lime receipt stated, “Your ride was carbon free.”

The study concludes that dockless scooters generally produce more greenhouse-gas emissions per passenger mile than a standard diesel bus with high ridership, an electric moped, an electric bicycle, a bicycle—or, of course, a walk.

The paper found that scooters do produce about half the emissions of a standard automobile, at around 200 grams of carbon dioxide per mile compared with nearly 415. But, crucially, the researchers found in a survey of e-scooter riders in Raleigh, North Carolina, that only 34% would have otherwise used a personal car or ride-sharing service. Nearly half would have biked or walked, 11% would have taken the bus, and 7% would have simply skipped the trip.

The bottom line: roughly two-thirds of the time, scooter rides generate more greenhouse-gas emissions than the alternative. And those increased emissions were greater than the gains from the car rides not taken, says Jeremiah Johnson, an engineering professor and one of the authors of the paper.

Le conducteur de la trottinette, âgé d’une trentaine d’années et qui ne portait pas de casque, a été percuté par l’arrière peu après minuit alors qu’il circulait sur cette autoroute dans le sens Paris-province, en direction de Créteil, a précisé un responsable des pompiers des Yvelines.

Le motard est polytraumatisé
Aucune explication n’a été donnée sur les raisons qui ont amené cet homme à s’engager sur l’autoroute, où les trottinettes sont interdites. “Il s’agit d’un choc frontal arrière. La moto a été retrouvée à 400 mètres des victimes, ayant probablement continué à rouler après le choc du fait de l’inertie”, a indiqué cette source.

La victime, en arrêt cardio-respiratoire à l’arrivée des secours, est décédée peu après. Le motard, polytraumatisé, était inconscient à l’arrivée des secours. Il a été hospitalisé.

Avec l’essor des trottinettes en libre service, les accidents, parfois mortels, se multiplient. Le 10 juin, un homme de 25 ans circulant en trottinette électrique est décédé après avoir percuté un camion dans le 18e arrondissement de Paris, dans le premier accident mortel concernant cet engin dans la capitale. En avril, un piéton octogénaire avait également trouvé la mort, à la suite d’un choc par une trottinette à Levallois-Perret (Hauts-de-Seine).

E-Scooter sind durch ihre kleinen Maße und praktische Handhabung die neue Alternative unter den Fortbewegungsmitteln. Die Tretroller mit Elektromotor können bis zu 20 km/h fahren und der Akku hält bis zu 40 km lang. Die seit 15. Juni 2019 Inkraft getretene Verordnung über die Teilnahme an Elektrokleinstfahrzeugen im Straßenverkehr sieht eine Versicherung für Fahrzeuge mit bestimmten Merkmalen vor. Der E-Scooter zählt mit Haltestange, der Leistung von bis zu 500 Watt sowie einer Geschwindigkeit zwischen 6 km/h und 20 km/h zu den Elektrokleinstfahrzeugen.

Als Nachweis einer vorhandenen Haftpflichtversicherung muss eine Versicherungsplakette auf der Rückseite angebracht werden. Für die Nutzung in anderen EU-Ländern ist eine grüne Versicherungskarte notwendig und Sie sollten sich über die Bestimmungen des jeweiligen Landes informieren. Das Versicherungsjahr beginnt frühestens am 01. März bzw. mit Abschluss des Vertrages, aber endet automatisch mit Ablauf des Februars. Die meisten Versicherungen berechnen einen anteiligen Beitrag bis zum Ablauf des Versicherungsjahres im Februar.

In a country that has more bikes than people and where cycling is seen as a human right, some people are about to have a nasty shock.

From Monday, anyone using a handheld mobile device while on the road in the Netherlands will be given a €95 (£85) fine.

The new rules for cyclists are part of a law to ensure road users watch the traffic rather than their cameras, tablets, and smartphones.

Vehicle and tram drivers risk a €240 fine, the penalty is €160 for motorbikes and scooters and powered wheelchair users are not exempt either.

“In the traffic, an accident is just around the corner and this is why it’s important for all road users – including cyclists – to keep their eyes and minds on the road and not on their telephone screen,” said transport minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, launching an awareness campaign on Friday.
