Google arbeitet an einem 3D-Hologramm-Telefon
Google I/O 2021

Google’s Project Starline Videoconference Tech Wants to Turn You Into a Hologram

Google’s Project Starline Videoconference Tech Wants to Turn You Into a Hologram  | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

OVER THE PAST several years, Google has been working hard to craft software experiences that make you feel like you’re present with another human being, even if they’re several time zones away. On one end of the spectrum is boring Google Meet, the company’s Zoom competitor. On the other, more daring end is the now discontinued virtual-reality platform Daydream, complete with goggles and hand controllers.

But nothing within that gamut was cutting it for Clay Bavor, the high-energy Googler who heads up the company’s augmented- and virtual-reality efforts. He wanted full-on photo-realistic, volumetric video meetings that make it look, sound, and feel like the other person is sitting across the table from you—no headset required.

Google IO 2021: Project 'Starline' promises 3D holographic video calls | #Hologram #VideoConference

Google IO 2021: Project 'Starline' promises 3D holographic video calls | #Hologram #VideoConference | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

At its annual Google I/O conference keynote, Google revealed a pie-in-the-sky project it's working on called Starline that could eventually change up remote video conferencing in the future. It's still in the very early stages of development, but Google's demonstration made Starline look seriously cool.

Unlike Zoom or Google Meet, Starline doesn't live in an app on your phone or laptop. Instead, you'll sit in a specially made booth with an advanced 3D display to talk to another person who's in the same kind of booth in another location. High-tech rendering technology will make it seem like the other person is directly across from you in the booth, even though they could be halfway across the world.

If Google could pull off Starline and make it widely accessible someday, we might never have to deal with the awkward latency and poor video or audio quality of a Zoom call ever again.

Google’s Project Starline brings us one step closer to holographic video calls | #Hologram

Google’s Project Starline brings us one step closer to holographic video calls | #Hologram | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

One of the coolest announcements at Google I/O this year was also one we did not expect: Google is working on holographic video calls — or something a lot like that — through a system called Project Starline.

Project Starline aims to make video calls more natural by using a large display that shows life-size, 3D images of participants. It’s not just 3D like a 3D movie, but rather it allows you to move around and change the angle you’re seeing of the other participant.
