How stretchable sensors will bring great change to wearables

How stretchable sensors will bring great change to wearables | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

Electronics circuitry is hard and rigid. We are not. And so a sea change is required if we want to make wearables that actually fit the human form.

Wrist-worn wearables only work as well as they do because there's a thin layer of relatively static human putty above our bones in this area. Try to produce a sensor for the neck or joints and you'll discover that today's wearables, small computers strapped onto pliant flesh, aren't up to the job.

Several stretchable solutions are in the works, though. Here are some of the most exciting and innovative projects to look out for.

Research team develops ultrathin, transparent oxide thin-film transistors for wearable display

Research team develops ultrathin, transparent oxide thin-film transistors for wearable display | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it

With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) era, strong demand has grown for wearable and transparent displays that can be applied to various fields such as augmented reality (AR) and skin-like thin flexible devices. However, previous flexible transparent displays have posed real challenges to overcome, which are, among others, poor transparency and low electrical performance. To improve the transparency and performance, past research efforts have tried to use inorganic-based electronics, but the fundamental thermal instabilities of plastic substrates have hampered the high temperature process, an essential step necessary for the fabrication of high performance electronic devices.

Android Wear: Google's Wearables Platform Is Here

Android Wear: Google's Wearables Platform Is Here | 21st Century Innovative Technologies and Developments as also discoveries, curiosity ( insolite)... | Scoop.it
Google jumps headfirst into the smartwatch space with its new platform, Android Wear.

The idea behind Android Wear is to bring contextual information to the user when it's most needed. That can mean getting the latest updates from a social app, pumping in instant messages and photos, and showing the fastest route to get to your next appointment.

The first concept for Android Wear, which Google displays in a concept video, has a lot in common with what we've seen from both Google Now and Google Glass.

Android Wear is voice-enabled, following the "OK Google" dictation scheme of gathering information. Google also says that Android Wear will hit on the popular health monitor market, allowing for real-time access to data for both users and apps.
