Successful leaders know that they must get out of their comfort zone to succeed. Great leaders from history are those who have spent a large amount of their time outside their comfort zone.

Leaders who take risks and step into their learning zone are those that succeed. It’s only when you can give up what’s safe and familiar that you create opportunities and develop new capabilities. As you do, you expand your influence and gain the skills required to take on bigger and bigger challenges.

In this sense, leaders are self-made and not born, they are developed, not promoted. Leadership is a learned skill that is developed as you step out of your comfort zone.

Vygotsky talked of the Zone of Proximal Development, and this article is in line with that foundational philosophy about learning.  When we think about improving schools, both of Vygotsky and this article apply.  We need leaders, teachers, and students operating outside their comfort zone, taking risks, setting goals, and learning.  There is a danger in struggling schools to push too hard and move buying the productive zone for learning.  This article speaks well to that aspect of learning.  With good intentions, leaders at building, district, and state level often push a school and omits staff beyond the productive learning zone into the danger zone.  This is done through programs, initiatives, and monitoring often with the goal of providing support, but with the result of overwhelming the school and staff.

Stop avoiding what scares you.

 

You need to speak in public, but your knees buckle even before you reach the podium. You want to expand your network, but you’d rather swallow nails than make small talk with strangers. Speaking up in meetings would further your reputation at work, but you’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Situations like these — ones that are important professionally, but personally terrifying — are, unfortunately, ubiquitous. An easy response to these situations is avoidance. Who wants to feel anxious when you don’t have to?

But the problem, of course, is that these tasks aren’t just unpleasant; they’re also necessary.

 

As we grow and learn in our jobs and in our careers, we’re constantly faced with situations where we need to adapt our behavior. It’s simply a reality of the world we work in today. And without the skill and courage to take the leap, we can miss out on important opportunities for advancement. How can we as professionals stop building our lives around avoiding these unpleasant, but professionally beneficial, tasks?

I admire seeing and talking to people give their best efforts handing over their experiences through seminars, workshops and now in social medias. Yes, in tough times our character is tested and evaluated after. There may be tips, guide or suggestions on how you will perk it up or do it in practice. No matter how your parents raised, guided and trained you, it will always be your decision and actions speak for yourself.

The Good Stuff Doesn’t Happen on Autopilot
When we live and work on autopilot, we tend to “stick to the known,” repeating what we did last year that worked and making incremental progress.  This dooms us to only achieving what we have already imagined and set into motion. There’s so much more that we’re missing. While we’re waiting to be “older and wiser”, we miss big opportunities to learn right now.


Growth doesn’t happen by itself. It takes an effort.
Because growth can be uncomfortable, it is often tempting to stick to the known path, the usual way, the “regular things” we do. But when we do that, we get into a routine and may end up going through the day on autopilot.


Instead of being easy and comfortable, real growth requires stretching outside of our comfort zones, believing we can grow and accomplish more, and continually working to get better.
