In a blog post, Bill Gates explores personalized learning.

 

Not only do kids get to learn at their own pace, which gives them more confidence, but teachers at Summit get matched with students who they'll mentor for all four years. Instructors can use in-house software to see which of their dozen or so students has completed certain assignments and exams.

 

The end result is that kids don't have many opportunities to slip through the cracks. And by taking an active role in their education, they learn responsibility and self-reliance.

 

"I love that approach," Gates says. "When students get out in the world, they have to organize their own time, have goals, and realize what they’re behind on. It's fantastic to see them getting a head start on those skills in school."

According to a study by Harvard Business Review, young high achievers value mentoring and coaching and often leave their current gigs in a quest to have those needs met. Companies like Microsoft and KPMG have caught on by giving employees exposure to peers in different divisions to provide fresh ideas and new ways of thinking.

In addition to more formalized training and education programs, many companies also try to foster mentorship within their organizations, often with mixed results. Like matchmaking, mentorship can seem shrouded in mystique and luck. HR departments eagerly set up colleagues for lunches or other work “dates” and cross their fingers that the chemistry will spark. A seasoned pro will take an eager novice under his or her wing and the next generation of great leaders will be born.

By: Dawn Casey-Rowe Teachers give homework. Mentors change lives. If schools replaced teachers with mentors, classrooms would be revolutionized forever. This isn’t semantics – it’s a paradigm shift...


As we redesign schools, we have a unique opportunity to find practices that work and use them. Mentoring is one of those practices. I don’t want to be a teacher anymore. Teachers give tests and assign homework.


I want to be a mentor. I want to support students as they create the masterpieces that will be their lives.


I can only do this if we make school less about the test and more about the mission–treating students like the unique individuals they are with gifts that will change the world.

Excellent insights! The mentor/student relationship is a significant part of the learning process for all students at all stages of their education. A mentor is more than a teacher or advisor. A mentor accompanies the student on their personal journey, advising and giving feedback along the way. Many students--either consciously or unconsciously--crave additional guidance from educators, but may not know how to seek out that guidance.  Mentoring programs--in which students can talk to teachers or other educational mentors in a setting that is less formal than the classroom--provide a structured opportunity for students to do this. A well-planned and executed mentoring program could help define goals and means for students to stay on track, learn and grow.

I must agree completely with this article. There must be a clear shift within classrooms to allow students to access their learning in more efficient was. Sadly however most parents do not have an understanding of this idea and therefore may have opposition to their children learning from their own experiences with the teacher supporting them along the way.

Teacher professional learning is of increasing interest as one way to support the increasingly complex skills students need to learn in preparation for further education and work in the 21st century. Sophisticated forms of teaching are needed to develop student competencies such as deep mastery of challenging content, critical thinking, complex problem-solving,

 

effective communication and collaboration, and self-direction. In turn, effective professional development (PD) is needed to help teachers learn and refine the pedagogies required to teach these skills. However, research has shown that many PD initiatives appear ineffective in supporting changes in teacher practices and student learning. Accordingly, we set out to discover the features of effective PD.

 

This paper reviews 35 methodologically rigorous studies that have demonstrated a positive link between teacher professional development, teaching practices, and student outcomes. We identify the features of these approaches and offer rich  descriptions of these models to inform those seeking to understand the nature of the initiatives.

Teacher Andrew Jones explains the difference between coaching and mentoring, and how they suit different professional development needs


Coaching, on the other hand, consists of peer-to-peer discussions that provide the person being coached with objective feedback on their strengths and weaknesses in areas chosen by them. While discussion is led by the coach, they ask questions that allow the professional seeking advice to reflect on their practice and set their own goals for improvement. This is the opposite of mentoring as the coach does not evaluate, judge or set targets, and the person being coached is in full control of the discussion.


Unlike mentoring, coaching also gives the recipient more say on the direction of their professional development and encourages them to take more ownership of their CPD.
