ENISA's new corporate 2013 video clip launched

ENISA's new corporate 2013 video clip launched | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
"Everything is connected"

ENISA has launched its new corporate video clip. This six-minutes movie describes the role of ENISA in a world where "everything is connected" both privately and professionaly. Communication technology  connects us to family, friends, banks, and other private and e-government services we all rely on. But the Internet is under constant threat, from crime, attacks and accidents. Spamhaus, Stuxnet, Flamer, High Roller  to name a few of the sophisticated cyber-attacks that took place the last 3 years.

It is the European Union Agency ENISA’s job to work with prevention at EU levels in the field of cyber security. ENISA is working with governments, regulators and industry to assess risks and identify practical solutions to keep business, citizens and economy secure.

This way, we support the smooth functioning of Europe’s internal market.

Why Multilingual People Have Healthier, More Engaged Brains

Why Multilingual People Have Healthier, More Engaged Brains | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Prior to the 1960s, scientists thought children who spoke more than one language had a handicap for learning because they had to spend too much time distinguishing between languages. With more modern brain imaging technology, researchers can now see how multilingualism actually strengthens the brain. People who speak more than one language have a higher density of gray matter that contains most of the brains neurons and synapses.

Europe Code Week - Guide for Organizers | Coding | MakerSpace | HackerSpace | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
#codeEU guidelines

If you have existing experience with organizing education events, you might just be interested in the main guidelines to follow when planning your #codeEU event:

  • Make the event beginner friendly, accessible even to those with no previous programming experience. Don't focus on the technicalities, try to show the fun and practical aspect of whatever technology is being used.
  • The format of the event is up to you. We do however recommend to include at least practical, hands-on time, where participants can create something on their own. Even better if they can take what they've learned home to share with family and friends!
  • You can use whatever tools and technologies you're most familiar with, although we do favor freely available open source tools and frameworks.
  • Learning something completely new can be intimidating. A smile and a friendly atmosphere can help break the ice and make those, who don't consider themselves "technical", more at ease.
  • It's also a good idea to plan a follow up. How can your participants keep learning? Who can they turn to if they have more questions?

Never organized an event before? Keep reading, it's not as difficult as you might think!

EU Parliament today voted to unlock public #opendata

EU Parliament today voted to unlock public #opendata | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
European Commission

EU unlocks a great new source of online innovationJune 13th, 2013

Today the European Parliament voted to formally agree new rules on open data – effectively making a reality of the proposal which I first put forward just over 18 months ago, and making it easier to open up huge amounts of public sector data.  This is about the data that public authorities can lawfully put out there – a huge wealth of information about your public services, how administrations are spending your tax euros, geographical or cultural information, and the like.

There’s a huge benefit to opening up. Once information is out there, there is so much you can do with it. Today many of you are familiar with apps that tell you where you are and where you need to go – based on public data from Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. But it goes beyond that: the boost from easier access is of the order tens of billions of euros. In short, this is an amazing raw material for innovation; we’re basically sitting on a goldmine.

But to make a real difference you need a few things. You need prices for the data to be reasonable if not free – given that the marginal cost of your using the data is pretty low. You need to be able to not just use the data: but re-use it, without dealing with complex conditions. And you need a wide range of data from across the EU, with consistent rules to make it easier to handle (like being machine-readable, not some poor-quality scan). And that is exactly what we are delivering.

European Commission - Press Release - European Commission Press release Brussels, 19 April 2013 Students and teachers in Europe are keen to "go digital", computer numbers have doubled since 2006 and most schools are now "connected", but use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and digital skill levels are very uneven.

These skills and support for teachers to deliver them need a strong boost, according to a survey on the use of digital technologies in schools in Europe published by the Commission.
