EU and US working together to build a better Internet for kids - European Commission

EU and US working together to build a better Internet for kids - European Commission | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Neelie KROES: European Commission...

Protecting children is a priority for all of us. We are all aware of the risks that kids face online; we all want to avoid them; and we all want to do that without losing the many benefits of an open, innovative online world – benefits for the young and old.

So I’m delighted that yesterday we in the EU joined forces with the US. When I personally met US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to sign a declaration on this important issue.
Did you know, the average EU 9 to 16-year-old spends about an hour and a half each day online? Often they’re doing that from a computer in their bedroom, or from their mobile. And using devices, services, and content from all over the world. All in all, that’s a big change, and a big challenge; but also a big opportunity.

===> Because there’s a chance to build a better Internet for kids. <===

SWGfL Staying Safe provides e-Safety information and resources for parents, schools and young people, whilst also presenting the latest e-Safety news.

Curriculum in a Nutshell
Digital media and technology are evolving at a dizzying pace, bringing with them extraordinary opportunities as well as real risks for young people. Young people are using the immense power of the Internet and mobile technologies to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. These technologies have changed the pattern of social relationships, their construction, negotiation and scope. The concept of “friends” and friendship has changed with the boundaries of privacy changing and evolving. Issues that emerge with this 24/7 “connected culture” – from identity theft, to cyberbullying, to uncertainty about which information to trust online – are surfacing both in schools and at home.

SWGfL is providing this FREE Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum to help educators empower their students and their school communities to be safe, responsible, and savvy as they navigate this fast-paced digital world.

The curriculum:

- Introduces reliable, research-based information to students about digital media and their impact

- Helps pupils / students explore the complex issues of our connected culture

- Empowers pupils /students to think critically about the ways they use digital technologies as they build digital literacy skills for life

- Develops a resilience in pupils / students to act appropriately and safely in their use of digital technologies

EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids

EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
European Commission - Press Release - European Commission MEMO Brussels, 20 November 2012 European Commission Vice President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes and the U.S.

Digital Agenda: EU and US sign joint declaration to make the internet safer for kids

European Commission Vice President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano have today signed a Joint Declaration in London, committing to make the Internet a safer and better place for children.

In the Declaration, Vice President Kroes and Secretary Napolitano:

- agree to implement joint campaigns on the occasion of an annual Safer Internet Day. As a first step, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security intends to participate in the EU’s Safer Internet Day for young people on February 5, 2013.

- commit to contribute to international cooperation in fighting child sexual abuse online in the immediate future. This will build on existing work by the Virtual Global Taskforce and Interpol on law enforcement collaboration to combat child sexual abuse worldwide. International cooperation is essential if we are to be effective in fighting child sexual abuse online.

- acknowledge that parents and guardians need to trust the content and services their children access and commit to continue working with industry and other stakeholders so that parents and children can make informed choices online.
This declaration complements other European Commission initiatives to keep children save and confident in the digital world. These include the EU Strategy for a safer internet and better internet content for children and teenagers presented earlier this year (see IP/12/445) and a Commission-brokered coalition of top tech & media companies to make the internet a better place for our kids. see IP/11/1485)

Parent Guide to Internet Safety

Parent Guide to Internet Safety | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Dear Parent:

Our children are our nation's most valuable asset. They represent the bright future of our country and hold our hopes for a better nation. Our children are also the most vulnerable members of society. Protecting our children against the fear of crime and from becoming victims of crime must be a national priority.

Unfortunately the same advances in computer and telecommunication technology that allow our children to reach out to new sources of knowledge and cultural experiences are also leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and harm by computer-sex offenders.

Keeping kids safe and empowered as they explore the digital world
Kids start using the Internet from the age of 7. Eighty eight minutes is the average time 9-16 year olds spend online. Children need quality content online to stimulate their imagination and help them learn, but they also need the skills and tools for using the Internet safely and responsibly.

A very good initiative, though I don't agree with the age of 7! Other reports show age of 3 1/2-4 and I taught my niece already 10 years ago about awareness when she had the age of 4 /12.

InternetSafety for Kids & Families

InternetSafety for Kids & Families | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In an age when everyone can author or share information to a mass audience almost instantly, it is more critical than ever to develop and sharpen our ability to discern the credible from the implausible things we see online.

There are many purveyors of false or biased information on the Internet – a company seductively advertising the effectiveness of its weight loss product, a politically-motivated organization hoping to persuade you to vote for their cause, a hacker attempting to fool you into clicking on something that infects your computer with malicious software.

Thankfully, among the mounds of information we find online, there is also the credible and the safe. It’s a good habit to have and teach others how to figure out which is which. I believe the skill to do this is made up of 2 basic things: information literacy and information security.
