The user dumping the information on Bitcoin Security board uses the online alias “tvskit” and says that although not all the entries are valid, more than 60% of them should be working; all passwords are provided in plain text.

It is unclear how the information was collected, but the most plausible theory is that the attacker(s) gathered the details through phishing and different forms of data exfiltration, such as the use of infostealing malware.

It's World Password Day, Change Yours

It's World Password Day, Change Yours | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Today is World Password Day, a holiday that’s here to remind us that our privacy is as safe as we make it be.

The day was first created by Intel Security and support for the idea has picked up. There are currently some 170 organizations, including Toshiba, Dell and Microsoft, and they’re asking Internet users to make sure that they change their passwords.

The concept came as Intel was thinking about a security education program. It’s not exactly a secret that people don’t change their passwords as the years go by, even though servers may fall prey to hackers and data can be stolen.

The Heartbleed Hit List: The Passwords You Need to Change Right Now | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Heartbleed: A look at which companies have issued a security patch to fix the Heartbleed bug.

Some Internet companies that were vulnerable to the bug have already updated their servers with a security patch to fix the issue. This means you'll need to go in and change your passwords immediately for these sites.

.

Even that is no guarantee that your information wasn't already compromised, but there's also no indication that hackers knew about the exploit before this week. The companies that are advising customers to change their passwords are doing so as a precautionary measure.

The Instagram Scam That Tricked 100,000 Users Into Giving Away Passwords

The Instagram Scam That Tricked 100,000 Users Into Giving Away Passwords | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
An app called InstLike promised free likes and followers on Instagram, but asked users to provide their usernames and passwords, turning them into a botnet.

Moreover, a user would get 20 free Likes if he used the hashtag #instlike_com in his own photo captions. A search on Instagram reveals that more than 500,000 photos already contain that hashtag.

All these features made InstLike a sophisticated ecosystem that employed thousands of voluntary "zombie" accounts — but it depended on their naiveté and willingness to give up their passwords.

For Narang, who is experienced in the realm of social media-based scams, the sheer volume of people involved is scary.
