Unlearn to Learn: 6 Non-Negotiables of High Quality Professional Learning | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Learning should be fun. With negotiated and scheduled professional development days and a menu of offerings delivered by internal and external providers, there are countless outlets to improve the format of professional learning to increase buy-in and more importantly, relevance for the community that you serve.

Each week, our Getting Smart team engages in deeper learning around a variety of topics that support our exploration of what is new and innovative in education. Recently we visited the topic of memorable professional learning experiences with the purpose of capturing what works and does not work, with an additional layer of intentionality in regards to the correlation of supporting educators as they pursue innovations in learning.

As instructional leaders craft professional development in any format, it is important to assess the flow and structure of what you are creating. Educational Leadership: Professional Learning: Reimagined: Rethinking Classroom Observation | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

A Different Approach

Teacher-driven observation addresses these problems by empowering teachers with a classroom-embedded process to refine their instruction. Through teacher-driven observation, teachers engage peers in gathering and analyzing classroom data—data that speak to the unique context of their own classrooms. What is Professional Learning?

What is Professional Learning? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Professional Learning
Whereas past professional development programs have often relied on seminars and lectures, the intent of professional learning is to make educators active participants in their career development. Professional learning is also a more collaborative experience, allowing educators to learn from one another and work together to create a more cohesive school community. In this way, professional learning helps develop school systems in which teachers can constantly develop strategies for increasing student achievement. Essentially, professional learning reflects many of the practices being implemented in blended classrooms—the same learning strategies that work for students can work for educators.
