The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Student Needs and Why

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Student Needs and Why | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Our Big List of 21st Century Skills
The Global Digital Citizen Foundation has given hundreds of presentations to educators and administrators in several countries over the years. Each time we’ve spoken, we have asked them what they feel are the most important 21st century skills students need above all others.
The answers that we’ve recieved most often are narrowed down below. This list comes from our book Literacy is Not Enough (Crockett, Lee et. al.; 2011). You’ll be able to see that these points correlate rather well with both the New Zealand’s capabilities list and the IB Learner Profile. They certainly cover the Common Core’s bases, too. It’s good to know we’re all on the same page, isn’t it? That’s great news for our students!
So, according to the folks we’ve asked, the consensus is that students need to acquire transparency-level skills in the following areas:

Problem solving
Creativity
Analytic thinking
Collaboration
Communication
Ethics, action, and accountabillty

This morning I was thinking about the things that all young people should know how to do regardless of income, geographical location, life goals, etc.  I started a list – see below.  Some have “always” been true – some are unique to this century of learning.  Let me know of any other universal skills you believe young people should know how to do.

Right 'up the alley' when addressing 21st century skills. I find particularly the "learn"-part interesting: the need for skills to "access, evaluate and use different forms of information, exihbit fluency with tech tools, and exercise critical thinking". Definately a focus relevant for my master´s thesis.

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, March 13, 2013 11:13 AM

There’s been a lot of talk about 21st century learners, 21st century teachers, and connected classrooms. There’s a daily influx of new technology into your inbox and your classroom feels woefully behind the times even if you’re flipping your 1:1 iPad classroom that’s already online and part of a MOOC. What are modern teachers to do with all this jargon and techno-babble being thrown at them all day long?

Simple. Take a step back. Breathe. And pick out just a small number of things you want to try in your classroom. Whether you’re itching to try a BYOD classroom or simply integrating a HyFlex model, it’s easy to take one digital step at a time, right? No need to try and revolutionize your classroom in one afternoon. That’s a recipe for failure.

In my experience, I’ve seen teachers attempt to integrate 30 iPads into their classroom by handing them out and then trying to figure out which apps are worth using. Integrating something as powerful as the iPad takes months of preparation, professional development, and buy-in by the students. If they just think ‘hey a way for me to play Angry Birds during class!’ then you have a steep hill to climb. So that’s why I’d encourage you, the modern teacher, to tackle each modern method one at a time.

Great link...and I agree there is a lot of confusion these days. As far as future job skills, there was a recent study that showed we are very poor at predicting specific occupations. It is far better to focus on core competencies versus preparing students for specific jobs given we're not all sure what they will even be in the future..my view.
Gust MEES's comment, February 1, 2013 8:31 AM
@Linda: TRUE, there will be NEW jobs which nobody today could predict! Therefore it is very important to teach the students, learners, the BEST possible skills of ICT which WE know actually and to teach them "Learning 2 Learn", so that they will be BEST prepared for Self-Learning (autodidact) to master the "Life Long Learning" who is aa MUST for 21st Century!

Each school provides different education programs. This allows there to be much difference when people apply for jobs. The skills that students gain are more broad and different from other students. This depends upon what school they attended and what teachers were there.
