21st Century Learning and Teaching

You don’t need a VR headset to experience virtual reality. That’s the message that AR/VR guru Jaime Donally wants all educators to understand.

“Headsets present barriers. I focus on implementation,” says Donally, author The Immersive Classroom: Create Customized Learning Experiences with AR/VR. “There’s a place for VR, but it needs to be more specific and thought through or VR becomes a road block.”

As both augmented and virtual reality become more accessible on ordinary devices, Donally hopes more educators will explore the potential of these tools. Augmented reality (AR) layers and enhances reality. Think using your phone camera to translate a foreign language. Virtual reality (VR) creates its own reality that is disconnected from the real world. It’s possible to use VR, such as a 360-degree view on a phone, without using a headset.

Google is convinced about the long-term of VR. The company is heavily pushing it through affordable hardware initiatives like Google Cardboard and Daydream. And now, Mountain View is bringing it to the classroom with the aim of introducing the concept to one million British schoolchildren.

In his first visit to the UK since landing the coveted role of Google CEO, Sundar Pichai has said that Mountain View will offer VR training and resources to teachers through its Google Expeditions program.

Virtual reality is an amazing technology. While we don’t claim to know if it’ll succeed in the gaming world outside of a narrow niche, the demos and games we’ve seen have been impressive, particularly when it comes to creating a sense of “being there.”

Thomas Metzinger is a philosopher at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, who specialises in the philosophy of mind and neuroscience. He is co-author, with Michael Madary, of a paper calling for a code of conduct for virtual reality.

Why do we need an ethical code of conduct for virtual reality?

Virtual reality headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will hit the consumer market this year and suddenly millions of people will be using them. VR can induce strong illusions of embodiment, where you feel as if you own and control another body. We do not know what the psychological consequences will be.

What are the risks?

There may be a risk of depersonalisation, where after an extended immersion in a virtual environment, your physical body may seem unreal to you. Fully immersive experiences have a bigger and more lasting impact on people’s behaviour and psychology. We know from the rubber hand illusion that our brains can be fooled into thinking that an inanimate rubber hand is our own. In VR environments, we can be fooled into thinking that we are our avatars.Consumers must understand that not all of the risks are known in advance. There may be a tiny percentage of the population that has a certain psychiatric vulnerability such that binging on VR may result in a prolonged psychotic episode. One can only speculate.

VR has long been heralded as a potential influential tool in academia. A 1998 study, Educational Uses of Virtual Reality Technology, published by Christine Youngblut of the Institute for Defense Analyses, found that when compared to traditional classroom environments, students of different backgrounds, ages and across a variety of different experiments generally had a positive experience with virtual reality. Moreover, their virtual lessons were evaluated as either being superior or on par with human instructors, and motivation among students was “extremely high.”

There is a coming new age in education, where students can learn by experience. This will be driven by virtual reality technology, and powered by UGC content. We are just beginning to see huge breakthroughs in the imaginative educational content that developers are creating for kids and young teenagers alike. The VR landscape is evolving — all the way from the living room to the classroom.

Wer bisher bei der Erstellung oder der Suche von 3D-Objekten oder -Szenen wenig Erfolg hatte, für den hat Google nun Poly: Die Bibliothek umfasst Tausende von Assets für Augmented Reality - egal ob per ARCore oder per ARKit - und Virtual Reality.
Google hat mit Poly eine 3D-Bibliothek für App-Entwickler online gestellt, die Objekte für Augmented Reality und Virtual Reality enthält.

In einem Blogeintrag erläutert Googles Andrea Zvinakis, dass sich Poly für Apples ARKit genauso eignet wie für Googles eigenes ARCore. Die Bibliothek ist zudem mit Blocks und mit Tilt Brush für VR-Headset wie HTCs Vive verknüpft.

Oculus Rift Is Too Cool to Ignore

Now that virtual reality has arrived (again), it’s here to stay—even if it’s not clear exactly how we will end up using it.

Virtual field trips

In addition to traveling to the moon, you can use Rift to kayak down the Colorado River while checking out the Grand Canyon, tossing tiny pellets to lure passing fish. You can dive with sharks, sea turtles, and other creatures, watching exhalation bubbles seep from the spot where your face mask should be and feeling that prickly sense you get when you’re actually underwater, wondering if something is creeping up behind you.

Over the next three years, such virtual field trips will become a lot more common, says Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab. His lab built one such experience, called The Crystal Reef, which lets you swim through areas of varying acidity in the ocean to explore the effects of carbon dioxide on underwater habitats. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, and Bailenson expects it to be available for Rift and HTC’s Vive headset in a few months.

Engagement is often seen as the “Holy Grail” of eLearning: If a learner is engaged with the learning material, then she/he is interested and invested in it, seeks to understand it, and will try hard to do well. Engaging eLearning is effective eLearning, and so if virtual reality can provide engaging learning, then it can be an excellent next step for eLearning.
