Today Google provided some tips, complete with case studies, on how to fix hacked sites. After speaking with two webmasters who resolved some complicated hacked site issues, Google decided to share their stories to help other site owners who may be trying to fix similar problems.


Google will also be using these stories, and other feedback sent in from webmasters, to continue to improve its documentation on fixing hacked sites.

Sucuri Security researchers are warning about a massive compromise of WordPress sites sporting malicious JavaScript leading visitors to malware.

The discovery was made on Sunday, when Google blacklisted over compromised 11,000 domains. After poking around a bit, the researchers discovered that most of the affected hosts are running WordPress.



Sucuri researchers are urging site administrators to check whether their sites have been compromised with this or other malware via their free website malware and security scanner.

The site says it will publish a full post mortem on the security incident in the near future, probably next week, and that users should follow @official_php on Twitter for updates.

Even if you run a tiny website and don't have much to hide, you (and your customers) are nevertheless at risk from criminals.

Web site users, be vigilant. If you think a site is not treating your PII with the respect it deserves, even for so-called casual or throwaway logins, then consider working, shopping or playing somewhere else.

 

Web site operators, don't be happy with the security standards of ten, five or even two years ago. Show that you care about PII and help to build and maintain the trust of your customers.

In February 2012, the incidence of malware infections on the 25,000 most popular websites was studied. Some of the findings are interesting.

 

Highlights of the infographic:

 

1. Over 10 million people would have been served with malicious software in the month that the survey was done, i.e February 2012.

 

2. United States hosted around half of all infected websites. The Netherlands came in second at 19%.

 

3. 54% of the infected websites are more than 5 years old; 43% of the websites were between 1 and 5 years

 

4. Free-tv-video-online.me, bigresource.com and myplaycity.com are the top 3 infected sites as per Alexa Site Ranking
