Niccolo Hurst

Despite the stiff competition, pint-sized Luxembourg was the big winner among the international competitors, winning first prize in the international participants category this week.

European school student Niccolo Hurst was able to convince the judges with his force measuring helmet.

The 16-year-old has developed a prototype helmet, which measures the force of impact in case of an accident. This is aimed at helping doctors treating patients with head injuries by providing more information about the circumstances of the accident.

The Teenage Brain: How Do We Measure Maturity? - Association for Psychological Science

The Teenage Brain: How Do We Measure Maturity? - Association for Psychological Science | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Bonnie and Scott do make some suggestions. Consider teenage drinking, for example, which is a form of sensation seeking and risk taking. It’s been argued that 18-year-olds should be permitted to drink, since they are considered old enough to go to war and assume other adult responsibilities.

But the teenage brain is vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, and research has shown that the age at which teens start drinking—and the intensity of this drinking—are strong predictors of alcohol abuse and addiction later in life. These scientific insights argue for maintaining the 21-year-old drinking age,

Bonnie and Scott say, and for intensifying efforts to keep teens from taking up drinking at all.

Binge drinking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Binge drinking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Binge drinking or heavy episodic drinking is the modern epithet for drinking alcoholic beverages with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.[1]

It is a kind of purposeful drinking style that is popular in several countries worldwide, and overlaps somewhat with social drinking since it is often done in groups. The degree of intoxication, however, varies between and within various cultures that engage in this practice.

A binge on alcohol can occur over hours or last up to several days. Due to the long-term effects of alcoholmisuse, binge drinking is considered to be a major public health issue.[2]

Education to Employment Report

Education to Employment Report | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Around the world, governments and businesses face a conundrum: high levels of youth unemployment and a shortage of job seekers with critical skills. How can a country successfully move its young people from education to employment?

Seventy-five million youth are unemployed

• Half of youth are not sure that their post secondary education has improved
their chances of finding a job*
• Almost 40 percent of employers say a lack of skills is the main reason for
entry-level vacancies!!!

Among working youth, only 55 percent landed in a job relevant to their field of study, with 25 percent finding interim work–jobs that are unrelated to their field of study and that youth plan to leave quickly.

Gust MEES's insight:

A MUST READ! Absolutely; download the PDF here:

Maturity (psychological) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maturity (psychological) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

In psychology, maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner. This response is generally learned rather than instinctive, ===> and is not determined by one's age. <===

Maturity also encompasses being aware of the correct time and place to behave and knowing when to act appropriately, according to the circumstances and the culture of the society one lives in.[1]

Adult development and maturity theories include the purpose in life concept, in which maturity emphasizes a clear comprehension of life's purpose, directedness, and intentionality which, contributes to the feeling that life is meaningful.[2]

Conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Conservatism (Latin: conservare, "to retain") is a political and social philosophy that promotes retaining traditional social institutions. A person who follows the philosophies of conservatism is referred to as a traditionalist or conservative.

Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others, called reactionaries, oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were".[1][2] The first established use of the term in a political context was by François-René de Chateaubriand in 1819, following theFrench Revolution.[3]

The term, historically associated with right-wing politics, has since been used to describe a wide range of views. There is no single set of policies that are universally regarded as conservative, because the meaning of conservatism depends on what is considered traditional in a given place and time.

===> Thus, conservatives from different parts of the world - each upholding their respective traditions - may disagree on a wide range of issues. <===

EU will offer every young person employment or training within four months of leaving school

EU will offer every young person employment or training within four months of leaving school | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The European Commission has launched their latest Youth Employment Package requesting a guarantee from all Member States that every young person receives a quality offer of employment or training within four months of leaving school, or of being unemployed. The proposal will make full use of EU funding and in particular the European Social Fund (ESF), which was set up to reduce the differences in prosperity and living standards across EU Member States and regions.

The new Youth Employment Package is part of the initiative Rethinking Education - designed to reduce the youth unemployment rate. Research has shown that the figure is close to 23 % across the European Union, yet more than 2 million vacancies remain unfilled.
