Computers and the Future of Skill Demand | #OECD #Books #DigitalSkills #ICT #Research | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Computer scientists are working on reproducing all human skills using artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. Unsurprisingly then, many people worry that these advances will dramatically change work skills in the years ahead and perhaps leave many workers unemployable.

This report develops a new approach to understanding these computer capabilities by using a test based on the OECD’s Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC) to compare computers with human workers. The test assesses three skills that are widely used at work and are an important focus of education: literacy, numeracy and problem solving with computers.

Most workers in OECD countries use the three skills every day. However, computers are close to reproducing these skills at the proficiency level of most adults in the workforce. Only 13% of workers now use these skills on a daily basis with a proficiency that is clearly higher than computers.

The findings raise troubling questions about whether most workers will be able to acquire the skills they need as these new computer capabilities are increasingly used over the next few decades. To answer those questions, the report’s approach could be extended across the full range of work skills. We need to know how computers and people compare across all skills to develop successful policies for work and education for the future.

The Critical 21st Century Skills Every Learner Needs and Why | #ModernEDUcation #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

Information and communication technology capability

Literacy

Numeracy

Teaching 21st Century Skills For 21st Century Success Requires An Ecosystem Approach | #eSkills #ICT

Teaching 21st Century Skills For 21st Century Success Requires An Ecosystem Approach | #eSkills #ICT | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
It is almost universally acknowledged that in order to succeed in the 21st century, students must learn much more than the “three Rs” and basic computer competency.

The term “21st century skills” is used often in educational circles to refer to a range of abilities and competencies that go beyond what has traditionally been taught in the classroom, including problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Others define the term as “information literacy, media literacy, and information, communication and technology literacy.”

More importantly, students need these skills because employers across a huge variety of industries increasingly demand them. A recent McKinsey report indicated that close to 40 percent of employers could not find people with the right skills while 60 percent “complain[ed] of a lack of preparation.” Even jobs that were once considered vocationalsuch as welding, petroleum production, and even factory work, are now high tech, and require specialized knowledge that includes not only a robust science background and familiarity with the computerized machinery that keeps heavy industry humming, but also critical thinking and collaboration skills. In other words, 21st century job growth is outpacing our ability to develop a prepared workforce, making it more critical than ever to teach these skills.

10 highlights capture the big picture themes of educational change that underpin the 18 topics:

1 Advancing progressive learning approaches requires cultural transformation.
2 Real-world skills are needed to bolster employability and workplace development.
3 Collaboration is key for scaling effective solutions.
4 Despite the proliferation of technology and online learning materials, access is still unequal.
5 Processes for assessing nuanced skills at a personal level are needed
6 Fluency in the digital realm is more than just understanding how to use technology.
7 Online, mobile, and blended learning are foregone conclusions.
8 Learning ecosystems must be agile enough to support the practices of the future.
9 Higher education is an incubator for developing more intuitive computers.
10 Lifelong learning is the lifeblood of higher education

This is an excellent idea for us to check how we can implement our topics and also, how learners can be interested on due to the fact that we are taking into account all the benefits they can have (this as an example of  the WH questions) and also since they can discuss about what they like to learn and share in classes. In adition, thi is something I can implement in classes since learners will have the opportunity to improve this speaking skill trhough the discussion of this kind of topics and also, the ones their are interested on. Finally, students will be able to participate more ought to the increase of motivation they will have since our duty is to encourage them to use the second language they are learning.
Harold Quintero's curator insight, September 26, 2020 2:37 AM
This is a very complete guide related to critical thinking questions that can allow us to help our students reflecting on the content we present them. These questions are also very useful for teachers in development to keep in mind while planning classes and preparing the material they are presenting to their students as it leads them to better select and adapt the content to students' needs and interests and have them engaged.

Envy - Wikipedia | #Character #Moral

Envy - Wikipedia

Aristotle (in Rhetoric) defined envy (φθόνος phthonos) "as the pain caused by the good fortune of others", while Kant defined it as "a reluctance to see our own well-being overshadowed by another's because the standard we use to see how well off we are is not the intrinsic worth of our own well-being but how it compares with that of others" (in Metaphysics of Morals).

However, psychologists have recently suggested that there may be two types of envy: malicious envy and benign envy—malicious envy being proposed as a sick force that ruins a person and his/her mind and causes the envious person to blindly want the "hero" to suffer; on the other hand, benign envy being proposed as a type of positive motivational force that causes the person to aspire to be as good as the "hero"-but only if benign envy is used in a right way.[4][5]

Throughout my 10+ year career, I’ve worked on this skill. I continue to work on it in my life outside of teaching. This skill will serve you (and your students) in many aspects of life. It’s certainly indispensable in the field of teaching, where stress abounds. So I’m about to tell you what I feel is the one teaching skill that all teachers need.
That skill is: the ability to turn things around.
That problem student? You need to be able to reach him. That bad day? You’ll need to recover from it and carry on the next. Unit plans not effective? You’ll need to change direction. It begins with your mindset. You start by knowing that failure is an opportunity to turn things around.

The Art of Turning It Around
Failure is not a label, nor a destiny. It is, however, a ‘not yet’ of a particular skill. ‘Not yet’ means you are capable and will get it eventually.

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

New ways of learning, owing much to digital technology and scientific research, are empowering students and business trainees.

The challenge we face is that learning is often not built to fit the learners,” says Dr Itiel Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist from University College London. “There is a mismatch between the learning and the learners. Learning must be ‘brain friendly’, so it’s engaging, motivating and effective.

The sector is being forced to step up its game. Since education operates in a world where millennials now check their phones more than 100 times a day, e-learning solutions must compete aggressively with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Candy Crush, which are just a distracting tap away.

“The use of technology, by itself, does not enhance learning, it depends on how it’s utilised. That is a great challenge and we are far from using technology to its full potential,” says Dr Dror, a world expert on learning.

The problem lies with most educational systems, globally. Since Victorian times, they’ve been creating mostly dependent learners. Beyond the classroom, students are like fish out of water, gasping for air. They’re reliant on the oxygen of teachers, discipline and schooling to acquire new skills.

This isn’t necessarily creating self-starters thirsty for knowledge and masters of their own learning.

Self-directed strategies are increasingly needed because a dependent-learner strategy cannot keep pace with the latest business developments, says Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president of Cornerstone OnDemand.

The true democratisation of education is now in full swing. “If we want to reach a level of greater learning empowerment, we must provide learners with the authority to be able to curate their own content and the resources to facilitate this. It’s only then that we will truly find learning empowerment,” Mr Belliveau concludes. The tools are all in place. It’s only a matter of time.

Gust MEES's insight:

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | #DigitalCitiZENship #eSkills

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | #DigitalCitiZENship #eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

We are becoming increasingly aware of the need to analyze the enormous amount of information we receive every day.  This information helps us in our cognitive development and participates in the construction of our patterns of perception of reality. In the case of children and young people, these patterns are in continual development.

Critical thought is a cognitive process that proposes the systematic analysis of information, opinion and statements that we accept in our daily life as valid or true. It is a basic skill for a competent, free and responsible citizen.

It is not about questioning every information we get everyday, it is about being critical with the information that is relevant to us when we make up an opinion about something.
