The Future of the Internet of Things [infographic]

The Future of the Internet of Things [infographic] | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Ever wonder why Google is installing extreamly fast gigabit internet infrastructure when the average person needs 200x less speed? It is because of the future of the Internet of Things. In less than 10 years, the internet will not just be for your phone or laptop, everything will be online.

I’m talking about your car, fridge, tv, blender, air conditioner, front door, and even your wallet. This inevitable future is why google is starting today with affordable gigabit internet. This new wave of device overload will open up revenue and advertising streams to a whole new level.

Today’s infographic states that in 2020, every human being on earth will be connected to 10 separate devices.

I know I’m already using five and I bet one of the most prominent technology coming up soon will be wearable tech. If its for exercising, sports, general information or just making phone calls, wearable tech will be an exciting addition today’s digital arsenal.

The Internet of Things – a new cybercrime target.

The Internet of Things – a new cybercrime target. | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The benefits that the Internet of Things can bring are numerous, but so are the concerns that it can facilitate cyber attacks.

As we are entering the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), our homes are becoming increasingly populated by devices that are connected to the Internet in order to share information with each other and the external world more easily.

Ranging from smart phones and smart TVs to motor-cars with 4G and Wi-Fi, from automated household appliances to sophisticated business tools, this web – connected smart devices are collectively known as the Internet of Things.

According to a Ciscoreport, it’s predicted that 50 billion objects worldwide will be connected to the internet by 2020.

Belkin WeMo flaws could allow remote control of home electronics | Internet Of Things

Belkin WeMo flaws could allow remote control of home electronics | Internet Of Things | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Researchers at IOActive discovered the vulnerabilities in Belkins WeMo home automation devices.

Belkin's website advertises four WeMo home automation devices, which allow users to manage a number of home electronics, including light switches, heaters, fans, lamps or stereos. After downloading WeMo apps compatible with Android and iPhones, users are able to remotely control or monitor devices while out of the house.

The WeMo Insight Switch, for instance, sends information to users about energy usage of home devices, like A/C units, TVs and washing machines.

“The vulnerabilities found within the Belkin WeMo devices expose users to several potentially costly threats, from home fires with possible tragic consequences to the simple waste of electricity,” the Tuesday release from IOActive said.

The firm also added that other attacks, impacting users' computers and mobile devices, could be scaled via the WeMo flaws.

Gauging 'Internet of Things' Risk

Gauging 'Internet of Things' Risk | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
In the past few months, the "Internet of Things" has gained more attention, and the cybersecurity and privacy implications are only beginning to be addressed in many quarters.

The term "Internet of Things" has been around for a half decade or so, although "things" connected to the Internet are as old as the network of networks itself. But in the past few months, the Internet of Things has gained more attention, and the cybersecurity andprivacy implications are only beginning to be addressed in many quarters.

Even the feds are concerned. James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, recently testified before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on global threats facing the United States. Among potential cyberthreats he cited are those "things" - physical objects such as vehicles, industrial components and home appliances - that generate information and increasingly are being linked to the Internet.

Internet of Things creating new challenges for cyber-security

Internet of Things creating new challenges for cyber-security | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
With the pace of innovation of Internet-connected devices, experts are worried security will struggle to catch up.

They are all impressive but "they're all breachable" said Kevin Haley, director of Symantec Security Response, while attending the huge high-tech trade show. "If the object is connected to the Internet, you will find it, and if it has an OS (operating system) you can hack it," he told AFP at the Las Vegas expo.

Haley said the pace of innovation could outstrip the security protecting the devices.

===> "As we start to bring all this new stuff in our houses, we're going have to take some responsibility," he said. <===
