"In einer Arbeitswelt von morgen mit steigenden Datenmengen, kürzer werdenden Halbwertszeiten von Wissen sowie einer erhöhten Flexibilität am Arbeitsplatz ist berufliche Weiterbildung schon lange nicht mehr Kür, sondern Pflicht", betont Esser in der aktuellen Ausgabe der BIBB-Fachzeitschrift "Berufsbildung in Wissenschaft und Praxis - BWP" mit dem Schwerpunktthema "Weiterbildung".

Der digitale Transformationsprozess, der Einsatz von Robotern sowie der wachsende Einfluss künstlicher Intelligenz sorge für bislang nicht gekannte strukturelle Verschiebungen in Arbeits- und Produktionsprozessen. Arbeiten und Lernen werden sich von Grund auf ändern. "Der Umgang mit leistungsstarken IT-Infrastrukturen sowie das Arbeiten und Lernen in Virtual- und Augmented-Reality-Umgebungen oder mithilfe von Erklärvideos und Tutorials sind längst keine Zukunftsmusik mehr", so der BIBB-Präsident weiter.

Google is convinced about the long-term of VR. The company is heavily pushing it through affordable hardware initiatives like Google Cardboard and Daydream. And now, Mountain View is bringing it to the classroom with the aim of introducing the concept to one million British schoolchildren.

In his first visit to the UK since landing the coveted role of Google CEO, Sundar Pichai has said that Mountain View will offer VR training and resources to teachers through its Google Expeditions program.

Thomas Metzinger is a philosopher at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, who specialises in the philosophy of mind and neuroscience. He is co-author, with Michael Madary, of a paper calling for a code of conduct for virtual reality.

Why do we need an ethical code of conduct for virtual reality?

Virtual reality headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will hit the consumer market this year and suddenly millions of people will be using them. VR can induce strong illusions of embodiment, where you feel as if you own and control another body. We do not know what the psychological consequences will be.

What are the risks?

There may be a risk of depersonalisation, where after an extended immersion in a virtual environment, your physical body may seem unreal to you. Fully immersive experiences have a bigger and more lasting impact on people’s behaviour and psychology. We know from the rubber hand illusion that our brains can be fooled into thinking that an inanimate rubber hand is our own. In VR environments, we can be fooled into thinking that we are our avatars.Consumers must understand that not all of the risks are known in advance. There may be a tiny percentage of the population that has a certain psychiatric vulnerability such that binging on VR may result in a prolonged psychotic episode. One can only speculate.

So where is this all going?

The Future of Education – Personalized, Perfect & Free (Thanks to AI and VR)


Right now, online platforms like Khan Academy and Coursera have made a plethora of educational resources available 1) for free and 2) on demand, such that you can pick and choose what you learn and at what speed you learn it.

Khan Academy has delivered over 300 million lessons since it started in 2006, features 5,000 free instructional videos in 65 languages, and allows users to complete 4 million exercises every day – simply amazing.

In 2011, Stanford professor Andrew Ng decided to put his machine learning course online for free, thinking that maybe a few additional people would tune in with his students. Within days, 100,000 people had signed up to take the course.

We are already seeing technology democratize access to education – but soon the education itself will become even more powerful with the help of AI and virtual and augmented reality.

In the near future, artificial intelligence will be able to personalize learning platforms to each individual student.

The AI will have unlimited access to information and will deliver it at the optimal speed to each student in an engaging, fun way.

Virtual reality is an amazing technology. While we don’t claim to know if it’ll succeed in the gaming world outside of a narrow niche, the demos and games we’ve seen have been impressive, particularly when it comes to creating a sense of “being there.”

 

Now, German prosecutors have created an advanced VR simulation of the German concentration camp Auschwitz, in an effort to model exactly where specific Nazi war criminals were and what they saw.

Virtual reality is an amazing technology. While we don’t claim to know if it’ll succeed in the gaming world outside of a narrow niche, the demos and games we’ve seen have been impressive, particularly when it comes to creating a sense of “being there.”

 

Now, German prosecutors have created an advanced VR simulation of the German concentration camp Auschwitz, in an effort to model exactly where specific Nazi war criminals were and what they saw.

Oculus Rift Is Too Cool to Ignore

Now that virtual reality has arrived (again), it’s here to stay—even if it’s not clear exactly how we will end up using it.

Virtual field trips

In addition to traveling to the moon, you can use Rift to kayak down the Colorado River while checking out the Grand Canyon, tossing tiny pellets to lure passing fish. You can dive with sharks, sea turtles, and other creatures, watching exhalation bubbles seep from the spot where your face mask should be and feeling that prickly sense you get when you’re actually underwater, wondering if something is creeping up behind you.

Over the next three years, such virtual field trips will become a lot more common, says Jeremy Bailenson, founding director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab. His lab built one such experience, called The Crystal Reef, which lets you swim through areas of varying acidity in the ocean to explore the effects of carbon dioxide on underwater habitats. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, and Bailenson expects it to be available for Rift and HTC’s Vive headset in a few months.

Now that virtual reality has arrived (again), it’s here to stay—even if it’s not clear exactly how we will end up using it.
