The Great Politician Hack | Digital Privacy | ICT | eSkills | DigitalCitiZEN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Public Wi-Fi is becoming more and more popular. It’s becoming prominent absolutely everywhere, and almost everyone uses it when given the opportunity. But many people still seem to feel that public Wi-Fi networks are built to give the public free Wi-Fi access without having to make concession with their privacy, and this is in spite of growingevidence to the contrary. And based on the show of political support for Wi-Fi, one can extend this to include the perception of lawmakers.

So we here at F-Secure teamed up with ethical hacking firm Mandalorian and investigative journalist Peter Warren to conduct a little experiment that could highlight the risks that people (including politicians) take when they use public Wi-Fi.

Roger Smith's curator insight, April 9, 2015 12:53 AM

After testing the security of six Internet of Things (IoT) devices commonly used in homes, Veracode security researchers found that product manufacturers don't put enough focus on security and privacy as a design priority; this puts users "at risk for an attack or physical intrusion." They found vulnerabilities in the devices that could potentially act as a "pathway for robbery, theft of sensitive data or even stalking."

Threat Intelligence: Reduce the Gap | CyberSecurity | Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Major cyber security incidents continue to hit the headlines. Security and privacy are top concerns for IT and security professionals, especially after 2014’s highly publicized data breaches.

Companies around the globe were victim to malware, stolen data and exploited vulnerabilities. Big companies weren’t immune to this, with Target, JPMogan Chase, Home Depot and Sony Pictures suffering the painful sting of data breaches. Even celebrities were targeted, with compromised iCloud accounts.

It really isn’t surprising that almost everyone anticipates the need to prepare for security challenges in the coming months. According to a recent survey by Tech Pro Research, 84 percent of IT professionals are more concerned about security and privacy in 2015.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is aware we live in a connected world. Americans wear Fitbits, have Nest thermostats, use automated light systems from companies like Belkin and Philips, even have televisions that predict what they want to watch. But in a new report, the FTC has a warning: Existing privacy regulations don’t really cover the Internet of Things, and the Commission doesn’t really trust device manufacturers to do the right thing—or even be aware of the risks of collecting all that data.

In a staff report issued this week, the FTC warned that makers of connected health, home, and transportation devices could potentially leave their users vulnerable to data hacks. Most of all, the FTC is concerned that private information will be used to jack up users' insurance rates or deny them access to loans.

ALERT!!! Firefox und Chrome verraten IP-Adressen trotz VPN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

How safe is my student data? | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Being online means accepting risk
Attacks and data theft are all over the news (think: Sony Pictures). Both high and low profile targets are breached every day it seems, and the trend doesn’t appear to be letting up. As a teacher or administrator using various web-based tools, the question will probably come up, “How secure is my and my students’ data?” It’s an important one, and the only antidote to paranoia is knowledge.

.

The risks are manageable
The relative difficulty of discovering new zero-day attacks means that these methods fetch a hefty sum in underground trading due to their rarity. Typically those who are purchasing the heretofore unknown exploits are looking to make a return on their investment.

Verizon’s Mobile ‘Supercookies’ Seen as Threat to Privacy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Advertisers, and possibly other third parties, are finding ways to exploit a hidden tracking mechanism that Verizon Wireless users cannot delete.

For the last several months, cybersecurity experts have been warning Verizon Wireless that it was putting the privacy of its customers at risk. Samsung warnt: Smart-TVs hören auch Privatgespräche mit | Privacy | Internet of Things | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Canada Joins World Powers in Spying on Smartphone and Download Data | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
In North America, the Canadians have long had to play country mouse to the flashier city mouse of the U.S. It's the latter that gets all the attention, while the former sits quietly in a corner. But recent stories have shown just how big a player the Canadians are becoming---at least in the surveillance realm.

FTC Report on Internet of Things Urges Security and Privacy Protections | CyberSecurity

FTC Report on Internet of Things Urges Security and Privacy Protections | CyberSecurity | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a report on Tuesday urging U.S. businesses to take steps to protect consumers’ privacy and security as Internet-connected devices that are part of the “Internet of Things” gain mainstream adoption.

The Internet of Things is “already impacting the daily lives of millions of Americans,” the FTC said. IoT technology like health and fitness monitors or home security cameras “offer the potential for improved health-monitoring, safer highways, and more efficient home energy use.” But they also raise privacy and security concerns that could undermine consumer confidence, the FTC said.
