Good to Great Simplified: How can your school make the leap? | eLeadership | eSkills | Teacherpreneurs

Good to Great Simplified: How can your school make the leap? | eLeadership | eSkills | Teacherpreneurs | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Jim Collins, author of the bestseller book “Good To Great : Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t” is convinced that “the good-to-great findings apply broadly—not just to CEOs but also to you and me in whatever work we’re engaged in, including the work of our own lives.” The guiding question to transforming schools from good to great should be: What can we do better than we are doing in the status quo? Big data has no big influence if it is not driven up to the top of the DIKW pyramid, where wisdom is the sum up of the school consistent efforts to move forward. Making good schools great challenges educators to take their school performance to a higher level than expected. They are challenged to simulate life for learners not only to prepare them for one.

Good to Great Simplified

Let’s imagine the scenario in the visual above, where a group of people is about to change their status quo from the bottom to the top of a hill. They have resided down the hill for years now, even though their life is good, they know that there is an orchard that will make their lives even better up the hill. However, they will need to travel through a rough path where they’ll have to leave their comfort zones behind and take the risk. They will also have to carry the payload to the top of the hill, and that will help them settle once they reach their destination. Nevertheless, the group will have doubts about the journey; they will all sit together with a strong desire for the journey. They will start discussing the best way to approach it, and decide that no one should be left behind. They will prepare for the leap that will change their lives immensely.

How to block pornography - Porn filter on phone - Anti porn software | DigitalCitiZEN | Parenting | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Are you a parent wondering how to block pornography on your child's internet and mobile devices? Our free digital parenting guide explains what is involved.

It is estimated that there are over 4 million pornography sites, that 25% of searches on search engines are pornography related, 30% of all internet traffic is pornography and the percentage of internet users who view pornography is estimated at 42%.  (source: Internet filter review)

If that last statistic of 42% seems high to you, a survey by Cosmopolitan Magazine of 4,000 men found that 30% watched porn daily and  71% of men 18-34 watch it at least once a month.  In a 2014 survey by the Oxford Union in the UK, 71.8% of all students said they view porn; 91% of men vs 51% of women.

In February 9, 2014 the Irish Mirror reported that Ireland’s internet porn use has increased 77%since 2010.

The reality is that it is very easy for our kids to be exposed to it. However, if you want to block pornography it is becoming increasingly difficult and complicated. It is no longer as simple as installing some anti porn software on your PC or installing a porn filter on your PC because kids now access the internet predominantly on mobile devices and also via gaming consoles.

EFF’s 2015 Data Privacy Report Lauds Apple, Dropbox, Slams Verizon

EFF’s 2015 Data Privacy Report Lauds Apple, Dropbox, Slams Verizon | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Digital rights organization the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has published its fifth annual Who has your back? report into online service providers’ transparency and privacy practices when it comes to government requests for accessing user data.

The organization notes a general transformation among major Internet players to be more transparent with users about data requests over the past four years. But for its latest report it’s tightened evaluation criteria, arguing that “it’s time to expect more from Silicon Valley”.

The report awards companies up to a maximum of five stars for performance in various areas, such as following what the EFF judges as “industry-accepted best practices”; telling users about government data demands; disclosing policies on data retention disclosing government content removal requests; and taking what it dubs a “pro-user” public policy position and specifically opposing government mandated backdoors in digital services.

Commonwealth of Learning - Large-Scale, Government-Supported Educational Tablet Initiatives

Commonwealth of Learning - Large-Scale, Government-Supported Educational Tablet Initiatives | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

A growing number of countries are embarking on large-scale, government-supported initiatives to distribute tablet devices to students in the K–12 schooling sector. Unfortunately, there is a misconception that by simply putting this technology in the hands of students, educational access issues will be resolved and educational transformation will occur. In this research project, a systematic review of current government-supported tablet initiatives around the world was conducted to understand their origins, underlying principles, financial and organisational models, and expected outcomes.

An extensive literature search and data extracted from identified documents showed that 11 countries have launched government-led tablet initiatives.

The review concluded that the majority of these initiatives have been driven by the tablet hype rather than by educational frameworks or research-based evidence.
