Big merger news in the drinks sector, with Fuller's selling their brewing business to Japanese firm, Asahi, for £250m. I'm sure the Fuller family, who went to Winchester, will have done very well out of the deal.
It is interesting to note that the deal only covers the drinks business, which I suspect refers to the brewing arm of the company. It is also a major player in the licensed trade, owning many pubs, predominantly in the South.
However, it might be worth thinking why Asahi have made the bid and what they hope to gain, not least given that the merger will take place at a time when the UK market appears to be faltering. It might be that they are hoping to capitalise on the strong brand that Fuller's have - particularly London Pride - and in getting market penetration for Asahi lager perhaps.
