The Guardian looks at the Jack's experience. It seems that reaction to the stores is mixed.

It's all going off in grocery retailing as a number of major retailers have announced that they are cutting prices in the New Year. Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsburys have all done so, hoping to stave off the advance of the discounters, Aldi and Lidl.

And lastly, the story of the day. Tesco are planning to launch a new budget chain, reportedly to be called Jack's, to rival the German discounters Aldi and Lidl. 

It represents the first time an incumbent has tried to take on the discounters at their own game, and might be a seminal moment in UK grocery retailing. If Jack's does well, might other supermarkets go down market. And if it fails, what does that imply for the Tesco brand more generally?
