The Harvard Library That Protects The World's Rarest Colors

The Harvard Library That Protects The World's Rarest Colors | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it
Today, every color imaginable is at your fingertips. You can peruse paint swatches at hardware stores, flip through Pantone books, and fuss with the color finder that comes with most computer programs, until achieving the hue of your heart's desire. But rewind to a few centuries ago and finding that one specific color might have meant trekking to a single mineral deposit in remote Afghanistan—as was the case with lapis lazuli, a rock prized for its brilliant blue hue, which made it more valuable than gold in medieval times.

The Great American Thermos Hoard.

The Great American Thermos Hoard. | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

The reason that this caught my eye and the reason I am so enthralled by this collection (any of my close friends who know me and have been to my apartment know), has to do with the fact that I have collected thermoses on and off since I was in college. Granted I don’t have a 5000 square foot loft (oh to live in Cleveland), but I do have a bunch of these old things around all over the place. The thing is, I see the vacuum bottle as a very symbolic Americana treasure. The thermos is undoubtedly linked to workwear and America’s blue-collar roots.

Vintage German Christmas Tree Candle Clips

Vintage German Christmas Tree Candle Clips | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Before electricity made its way into most homes, Christmas trees had the warm glow of candlelight. The candles were attached to the tree branches via little metal clips. Most often they were decorative clips made in Germany, like these shown here.  Since using candles to light your tree is neither practical, nor safe, we don’t recommend bringing back that tradition lightly. (No pun intended!) But that doesn’t mean you can’t safely use these charming bits of Christmas past this holiday.

In the collector world, nothing is truly “weird” | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

“The honest truth is, I don’t find anything to be weird in collecting,” says collector Deanna.

...We’ve all heard the expression “one man’s trash is another’s treasure”, well, one man’s treasure is another man’s weird.

Preserving The Integrity Of An Old Glass Preserves Bottle

Preserving The Integrity Of An Old Glass Preserves Bottle | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

I knew that whatever was in this old glass jar was not a “good thing,” but somehow the metallic silver tone still sparkled and beckoned from behind the decorative molded glass. Look how the caramel-colored whatever-it-is seemed to flow along the inside of the smooth art deco lines! And who doesn’t love the dear Old Manse paper label on the front?! So I snapped it up.

But, oh, the work!

...The documents include the names of artists – many well known – with prices or values for some works, and by reference to the largely unpublished inventory of his estate, give some indication of which works in the documents Biringucci acquired and how his taste conformed to the prevailing trends of the period.

Old does not equal valuable

Old does not equal valuable | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Worth is a worthless term. “I’m forever hearing this is worth such and such,” said Sullivan. “I wish I could strike the word ‘worth’ from our vocabulary.” The value the person states is always far greater than what the item would ever sell for. That’s especially true of collectables, he said. “In a collectors’ catalog, an item will be listed for one value, but if you want to sell it, you won’t get anywhere near that.”
