The Harvard Library That Protects The World's Rarest Colors

The Harvard Library That Protects The World's Rarest Colors | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it
Today, every color imaginable is at your fingertips. You can peruse paint swatches at hardware stores, flip through Pantone books, and fuss with the color finder that comes with most computer programs, until achieving the hue of your heart's desire. But rewind to a few centuries ago and finding that one specific color might have meant trekking to a single mineral deposit in remote Afghanistan—as was the case with lapis lazuli, a rock prized for its brilliant blue hue, which made it more valuable than gold in medieval times.

Auctions spark Olympic Museum manager’s passion for history

Auctions spark Olympic Museum manager’s passion for history | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Like many museum professionals, Lake Placid Olympic Museum director Alison Haas fell in love with the U.S. version of the "Antiques Roadshow" television program when it first aired on PBS in 1997.

A 1996 graduate of the Potsdam High School, Haas was studying art history at the time at St. Lawrence University in Canton.

"On Saturday mornings, I would wake up while all my other friends were sleeping in, and I would go to auctions," Haas said. "And I became obsessed with objects."

No room for archaeology archive in 27% of museums

No room for archaeology archive in 27% of museums | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

A survey by the Society of Museum Archaeologists (SMA) has exposed a lack of storage space and curatorial expertise in English museums dealing with archaeological archives.

The survey of 134 museums found that 36 could not accept archaeological archives because of lack of space.

It also revealed that museums in 47 local authorities were no longer collecting, while 70% of museums had no specialist archaeology curator.

SMA chairwoman Gail Boyle said: “Many of the museums that responded are local authority museums that have no statutory funding, so they are often targeted [for cuts]. It has become prevalent over time and is getting worse.

“Archaeological field units are having to store their work, as there is nowhere for them to deposit it.

Sad, but not a surprise. I've watched 'Museum Secrets' and see them pull stuff out of storage bins and talk about things found, again.

Without the archives, what value are the 'finds' to which they are linked?  Very sad.
