Design Ideas: Auctioning a little house and library chairs

Design Ideas: Auctioning a little house and library chairs | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

During her lifetime, Mary Griggs Burke, one of the most important private collectors of Japanese art in the world, kept an extra apartment on New York’s Upper East Side, right next door to another where she lived, for her beloved art objects. She died in December at age 96.

But one of her treasures remains at her historic summer estate in Cable, Wisconsin, which was donated to the Chequamegon National Forest. While small, for what it is, the historic cottage is not so portable.

The tiny home had been in Burke’s family since her father bought it in the early 20th century. It was used as a children’s playhouse and remains outfitted with child-sized furnishings. The historic prefabricated cottage will be auctioned by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Milwaukee on July 25.

...Also to be auctioned by Hindman on the same date are a selection of chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, which were in use at Milwaukee’s East Side Library until it closed recently.

The paramount thing when buying an engagement ring is that you feel comfortable wearing it. This will be a ring you wear for the rest of your life, so make sure you get something that suits you. Antique ring styles span a huge variety of looks, materials and gemstones, and by knowing what period suits your look and spending time to research options online you can narrow your search down and really save time to hone in on your dream ring. Couple this knowledge with an understanding of the 4 C’s and what questions to ask a jeweler when purchasing, and you’ll be sure to get a high quality ring that you can enjoy for a lifetime!

1925 Parlor Putter

1925 Parlor Putter | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

The amazing Parlor Putter! Circa 1925, manufactured by the Wellington-Stone Company in Chicago, Illinois, this nearly-antique piece is a bronzed & painted cast iron ashtray stand with more than a golfing theme -- it's a real practice putter! Just below the copper ashtray is a triangular shelf which holds 3 golf balls and 3 putters. Use the clubs to putt the balls into one of the 3 holes in the base of the stand!

Antique 1900's Stunning Glass Frame with Photo, Late Victorian

Antique 1900's Stunning Glass Frame with Photo, Late Victorian | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it
This is a beautiful antique glass frame with hand painted flowers and leaves! Some of the paint has worn away, but that only adds to its charm, in my opinion. The glass frame measures approx. 5.5" wide x 8" tall.

History Lesson: Stirrup Cups

History Lesson: Stirrup Cups | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

This type of specialized drinking vessel was called a stirrup cup. While the form had ancient Roman precedents, they were most popular throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries. This type of cup was often presented to a rider on horseback — while their feet were in the stirrups of the saddle — when they were departing or arriving home, often from the hunt. Since stirrup cups generally have no base, the presence of servants to hand the cup (sometimes on a specially fitted tray) to the drinker was necessary and the recipient was required to down the contents fairly quickly.

...The documents include the names of artists – many well known – with prices or values for some works, and by reference to the largely unpublished inventory of his estate, give some indication of which works in the documents Biringucci acquired and how his taste conformed to the prevailing trends of the period.

Old does not equal valuable

Old does not equal valuable | Antiques & Vintage Collectibles | Scoop.it

Worth is a worthless term. “I’m forever hearing this is worth such and such,” said Sullivan. “I wish I could strike the word ‘worth’ from our vocabulary.” The value the person states is always far greater than what the item would ever sell for. That’s especially true of collectables, he said. “In a collectors’ catalog, an item will be listed for one value, but if you want to sell it, you won’t get anywhere near that.”
