Research: How Video Production Affects Student Engagement

edX recently commissioned a study of nearly 1,000 videos, segmenting them out by by video type and production style, and discovered this among their other findings:

  1. Shorter videos are more engaging. Engagement drops after 6 minutes.
  2. Videos with a more personal feeling are more effective than high-fidelity studio recordings.
  3. Videos in which the instructor speaks quickly and with high enthusiasm are more engaging.
  4. Khan-style tablet drawings are more engaging than power point slides.

Hansen's Link to Tech: Blended Learning with EDpuzzle

Hansen's Link to Tech: Blended Learning with EDpuzzle | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
A educational method  in which a student learns at least in part through delivery of content and instruction via digital and online media with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace. Check out this great infographic from Knewton to learn more about blended learning (I also embedded at the bottom of this post).
The application EDpuzzle is a great teacher and/or student utilization and creation tool to find great educational video resources, add stopping points for surveys/assessments, audio input, and commenting. As a teacher you can enroll your students within the app or you or your students can create interactive videos and share them in what ever way is appropriate for your class.

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S. DEBATES "EMBRACE THE COMMON CORE"

INTELLIGENCE SQUARED U.S. DEBATES "EMBRACE THE COMMON CORE" | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

Live AT KAUFMAN CENTER, SEPTEMBER 9TH.  Live streaming will be available.

About This Event

In K-12 education, there is nothing more controversial than the Common Core State Standards, national academic standards in English and math. Adopted by more than 40 states, they were developed, in part, to address concerns that American students were falling behind their foreign counterparts and graduating high school without the necessary skills for college and the workforce. But is this the reform we’ve been looking for? Has the federal government overreached and saddled our schools with standards that have been flawed from the start? Or will the Common Core raise the bar and improve the quality of our children’s education?

The Importance of Content Curation for Digital Citizenship and How To Use Pearltrees in Teaching Environments

Content curation can be of help to teachers and educators interested in guiding students in learning and appreciating the importance of active digital citizenship.

Jane Schmude, an Australian education graduate and a passionate teacher-librarian, outlines the reasons for such importance while providing also a good 5-minute visual introduction to Pearltrees as an ideal curation tool to carry out this type of project.

Useful intro for teachers, educators and librarians interested to learn more about the opportunities offered by curation.

Accessible Video Captioning for Distance Education and Online Learning

Accessible Video Captioning for Distance Education and Online Learning | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
3Play’s Tole Khesin will speak with Rob Haley of Boston University’s Distance Learning Department as both share information on relevant accessibility legislation and best practices for online video captioning.

Online education is gaining popularity through MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses). But as a recent novelty, MOOCs have been built from the ground up. Traditional universities however, face the challenge of creating comprehensive online learning programs that meet the needs of all students whilst testing new technology and incorporating instructional practices. Accessibility implementation must happen on multiple levels: procurement contracts, faculty training, IT integration and online course production. - See more at: http://www.3playmedia.com/2013/05/13/upcoming-joint-presentation-boston-university-accessibility-distance-education-online-learning/#sthash.iQKwrub8.dpuf
