TEACHER LEADERSHIP & DEEPER LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS

In this new paper commissioned by the Ford Foundation, Barnett Berry makes the case for how a system of teacher leadership and learning can fuel deeper learning for all students.

Here is what the paper tackles:

examines current reforms’ limitations and notes some promising emergent examples, (like Social Justice Humanitas Academy in LAUSD); summarizes 30 years of research about how teachers learn and lead (also drawing on stories of teachers CTQ has worked with since our founding in 1998); identifies three promising shifts that could be leveraged to create an effective system of teacher leadership and learning; and
describes next steps that stakeholders (including policymakers, USDOE, state education leaders, superintendents, and others) can take to advance teacher leadership toward a more equitable public education system.

The infographic below reveals 3 big changes we can leverage now to improve public education for all students.

3 Excellent Real Time Collaborative Whiteboard Tools for Teachers

3 Excellent Real Time Collaborative Whiteboard Tools for Teachers | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

There are several reasons why you would be thinking to use collaborative white boards in your classroom . As a teacher, you can use these collaborative web tools to explain abstract hard to grasp concepts to your students through  diagrams, illustrative drawings, mindmaps...etc .

You can also use them to get students working collaboratively on a classroom project. The cool thing about these collaborative whiteboard tools is that they are web-based and therefore do not require any software installation and you can access them anywhere with internet connection. Here are three new tools I recommend for you today, check them out below and share with us what you think of them.

How flipped #learning works in (and out of) the classroom

How flipped #learning works in (and out of) the classroom | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

Flipped learning is more than just having students do homework during the school day. It’s more than just putting the onus on students to teach themselves. In fact, it’s neither of those things. Don’t be fooled by simple explanations of flipped classrooms that simplify a highly complex undertaking.

Framework for Professional Development: SAMR Template & Infographic | #learning | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

"My colleague, Silvana Meneghini, and I have been working on developing a Professional Development framework for embedding technology use and modern learning litercies based on Ruben Puentedura's SAMR model.

The template consists of 4 Focus Areas. Each stage of the SAMR model consists of 4 focus areas in the template, that support vision, planning, and evaluation in activity and task design as well as a professional development framework."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, January 28, 2014 9:52 PM

If you are considering using the SAMR model to design lesson plans/units you should consider checking out this post. There is a very detailed template that helps you walk through the steps and consider how to best design your lesson/unit. The template is detailed and you may download it as a pdf. An example is included.

Many are turning to the SAMR model as a guide to integrate technology into their curriculum. If this model is new to you search this Scoop.it or type SAMR in your favorite search engine and you will find a wide variety of resources.

Peer Review

Peer Review | Best Practices in Instructional Design & Use of Learning Technologies | Scoop.it
Created by Laura Guertin, Pennsylvania State University Brandywine "For generations, the academic community has relied on peer review as a way of enhancing the knowledge base and encouraging serious scholarship. Peer review can offer many of the same benefit to students... [and] computers [can] mediate the interaction among peers." - Gehringer (2000)

Why use peer review - students improve science communication skills

Peer review is useful for instructors of large introductory-level courses that want to challenge their students to think critically, synthesize information, and communicate science in nontechnical language. Through use of technological tools, electronic peer review provides the option of not restricting the peer-review process to a particular location and/or time, while the grading load is lessened on an instructor.
