CMEC Groundbreaking Ceremony

CMEC Groundbreaking Ceremony | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Cayo Resource and Resilience Centre groundbreaking ceremony was last week.  It'll be located on the Galvez Stadium grounds, and once finished, can be used as a civic center for Cayo.  It's a joint project between the GoB and the Government of Italy.

"The Community Multi-purpose Emergency Centre (CMEC) will provide the residents of five rural communities and the town of San Ignacio with a central self-contained Centre that can be used both as a shelter in the event of a weather-related and other emergencies, and for other community social and sporting purposes and events. The five rural communities to be served by the Centre are Trenchtown, Kontiki, Boiton Area, Mosquitoville and Shawville.

The completed Community Centre will be equipped with an independently powered hybrid grid-connected PV renewable energy system, a rainwater storage system; an emergency communication system to ensure its continued operation during a major weather or other disaster event. Construction of the CMEC commenced November 22, 2018 and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2019 at an estimated cost of BZ$1.6 million. Funding is being provided by the Government of Italy and the Government of Belize."

Cayo Resource and Resilience Centre Coming

Cayo Resource and Resilience Centre Coming | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo's getting a new multi-purpose building on the Galvez Stadium grounds.  Check out the pictures of the planned building.  The CNRRC will be the 2nd part of a project aimed at making Cayo more sustainable(via reducing our carbon footprint).

"The first component includes the replacement of old and inefficient conventional street lights with 1000 Light-emitting Diode (LED) fixtures. The use of LED improves efficiency as it uses up to 50% less energy than existing fixtures, while at the same time producing 3 times the amount of light. Furthermore, LEDs have a lifetime of 10-15 years while conventional fixtures last between 3-5 years, thus reducing maintenance costs. To date, fixtures have been procured and a first phase encompassing 15 streets across San Ignacio Town has been completed. The implementation of this component continues.

The second component includes the construction of a state of the art Multi-Purpose Community Centre at the Victor Galvez Stadium. The “Cayo North Resource and Resilience Centre (CNRRC)” will be designed to be powered by a Photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy system as well as storage tanks for potable water; thus, supporting its self-sustenance. The main purpose for this investment is the provision of modern infrastructure to serve residents of San Ignacio Town and surrounding communities in times of national emergencies and extreme weather. However, the Centre is also being designed to support immediate local social and youth development needs. The facility will include the construction of a full indoor gymnasium complete with a FIBA quality Basketball Court, seating for 600, a stage, dressing rooms, bathrooms and office space. When not in use for emergencies, the facility will be used to host local and international sport events, conferences, concerts and other community events."
