Green Iguana Conservation Project

Green Iguana Conservation Project | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Green Iguana Conservation Project, listed as number 1 on things to do in San Ignacio on Trip Advisor, is going strong.  Humberto Requena really is the iguana whisperer.  You'll get a quick medicinal trail tour on the way there, and you'll be able to taste the termites.  Thanks go out to the San Ignacio Resort Hotel for creating a project that does so much for the endangered green iguana.

Howler Monkeys at the CBS

Howler Monkeys at the CBS | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a great review of the Community Baboon Sanctuary.  It gives a good overview, and tells the CBS' history.  It's to the howler monkeys what the Iguana Hatchery is to iguanas.

"This organization started in 1985 with the idea that local landowners in villages where black howler monkeys live could voluntarily pledge to conserve and practice sustainable land management practices.  27 years later, the organization is still going strong, and is led by a group of women called the Women’s Conservation Group.  Over 200 people in 7 small communities across 20 square miles have pledged to conserve their land for the black howler monkey.  The Women’s Conservation Group has representatives from each community.  These women attend monthly meetings and bring news back to their communities to share in the conservation effort.  They are also in charge of tourism at the sanctuary, educational efforts, managing the museum, lodging, tours, and the list goes on and on."

San Ignacio Resort Hotel on Luxury Travel

The SIRH got a wonderful write up.  And of course the Green Iguana Conservation Project is mentioned.  There are video links, where Humberto shows the author around the grounds.

"From the owners to the waitstaff at the Running W Steakhouse to the front desk to my tour guide at the Iguana Project (who had me eat termites in this video) to my masseuse at the on-site spa, I had nothing but positive experiences with everyone that worked at the hotel.  My one regret is that I didn’t have the opportunity to spend more time in the Master Suite.  With a grand staircase leading up to it, the view of the Macal River valley from the balcony and beautiful hardwood and art."

"A visit to the Iguana Hatchery"

"A visit to the Iguana Hatchery" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Green Iguana Conservation Project rocks!  They have some sad news: Roxy has passed away.  That won't stop them from thrilling tourists from all around the globe.  Mariposa Jungle Lodge has some really amazing shots of guests with baby iguanas on them.

"Have you ever been this close to a reptile? Come and have a look, it's an amazing experience!

For quite some years the San Ignacio Resort Hotel have been at the forefront of conservation for the threatened Green Iguana. A highly interpretive and educational exhibit has been designed within the Resort’s property in order to create a closer look at this amazing reptile, and to learn how vital they could be to the ecological balance of the river habitat."

Costa Maya Delegates Visit Iguana Hatchery | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The contestants for La Reina de la Costa Maya visited the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel while they were visiting Cayo.  Looks like they had a great time, and they surely gave the iguanas some love.  Miss Honduras released one into the wild!  When wast the last time you saw pageant contestants covered with iguanas?

"The International Costa Maya Festival has officially began with the arrival of the Reina de la Costa Maya Delegates.  The eight beauties from el Mundo Maya, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize have been having fun since their arrival in our beautiful country.  They first headed to San Ignacio, Cayo and were hosted by the San Ignacio Resort where they had a welcome dinner by the hotel’s proprietors and got to meet Rebecca Stirm, a rising Belizean fashion designer who had two of the girls model one of her dresses.  The following day, they were given a tour to the Iguana Project, an initiative by the San Ignacio Resort to help protect Green Iguanas in Belize.  The delegates had fun interacting with the reptiles and took many photos to take memories back home.  Miss Honduras even got to release one to the wild as a Birthday present by The San Ignacio Hotel."
