Maya King of Cahal Pech

Maya King of Cahal Pech | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Archaeological news of the day, courtesy of Nine Eco Cultural Tours.  King Kawil Ka’an Chan Ba’lam was his name.  Cahal Pech is still actively being excavated by Dr. Awe and his archaeological students, and they've made some great discoveries.

"In the Summer of 2013 Dr. Jaime Awe and archaeologists colleagues did some excavations at the summit of the grand temple in Plaza B of the site...  This was a special gift to the King Kawil Ka’an Chan Ba’lam whose remains was embellished with jade jewellery and a corn god relief.  His name, most impressively, was on a ring made out of the remains of a deer antler.  Awesome!  For the first time, since the early 1950′s when Linton Satterwaite first excavated Cahal Pech, we are introduced to a name of a King.  Sixty four years we waited and with lucky strokes of the pick axe and the faithful trowel and faithful and ambitious archaeologists, a royal tomb, for the world to know that a living god walked here."

Belize History from Nine Eco Cultural Tours

Joe Awe's new tour operation, Nine Eco Cultural Tours, has a really cool history page.  From man's start in Belize to the Maya, it's there.  Nine is going to take off!

"Inside this haven rich with wildlife, pristine rivers, lakes and streams, and formidable forests many cultures will come to the fore including, among many, the Olmec who are considered the ‘cultura madre’ (Mother culture) of all Mesoamerican cultures, the Zapotecs who are credited with the original writing process, the Mixtecs, and of course, the Maya who evolved from the original Paleo Indians and Archaic people."

Cool video of the day.  The Institute for Sustainable International Studies had Nine Eco Cultural Tours take them From Midas to Billy Barquedier National Park, and they had a mounted camera take a picture every second.  It takes under 4 minutes to complete the journey.  Worth a watch.

Nine Belize Eco Cultural Tours has launched its website.  Well done.  Joe Awe's site looks and feels great.  His philosophy, found on the 'About Us' page, is amazing, and explained perfectly.  Best of luck!

"'Nine' is the number that, for the ancient Maya, represents the 'underworld', 'Metnal', 'The Place of Fright'.  This number in Maya numerals is represented by a bar and four dots on top of the bar – the logo of this company reflects just that.  The second ‘dot’ in the logo has a fingerprint on it, reflecting the important element of uniqueness of culture and people.  The bar, which is a small tree branch, has a leaf with two water droplets reflective of a green livable world that we must protect and infuse new leadership into from the depths of all our combined creation place!"
