Inspired To Ride: La Ruta Maya

The La Ruta Maya, the canoe race from Cayo to Belize City, is only a month away.  It starts on Friday, March 8th, under the Hawkesworth Bridge.  Here's a video from last year's race, when paddle boards were first allowed.

"Shane Perrin attempts to make history by solo paddling the 179 mile La Ruta Maya Belize river challenge on a stand up paddle board.  His heroic journey commemorates the tenth anniversary of his second chance at life."

You should fact check whether paddle boards were "allowed". I think this guy just went along, unofficially.

There will be paddle boards in La Ruta Maya race?!?  We've gotta see that to believe it.

"After each day’s mileage is complete, they are going to get the people of Belize out on paddleboards so they can experience it for the first time. Todd, co-owner of Pau Hana Surf Supply, is the mastermind behind the entire trip. He set everything up and contracted a film crew to capture the whole experience in a documentary.

Pau Hana Surf Supply are really breaking new ground with this expedition. In the race’s 15 year history, there have only been three man canoes allowed to enter. Shane is the first stand-up paddle boarder allowed to race."

The paddle boarder had fun on La Ruta Maya, and practicing for it.  He finished the challenge.

"Pau Hana Surf Supply continue their training in San Ignacio, Belize for the ultimate race, La Ruta Maya River Challenge! Four days and 170 miles of river racing on a paddleboard is my kind of adventure!  Imagine hopping onto a paddleboard every morning for four days and paddling for an average of 42.5 miles a day under the tropical sun with little support and only the supplies you’re carrying on your board! La Ruta Maya River Challenge is not for the faint of heart."
