Cayo is for Nature Lovers

Cayo is for Nature Lovers | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo was featured again on the Huffington Post and on International Living.   Mr. Greedy's, the Saturday market, and Rotary all got mentioned in the fact filled article.

"Geographically, the more than 2,000 square miles of this district offer everything from broad farmlands, gently rolling citrus orchards and cattle ranches to rugged mountains laced with caves and deep river gorges.  No wonder that along with agriculture, eco-tourism is now a mainstay of Cayo's economy.  Tourists are drawn by the many caves, waterfalls, and Maya archeological sites... more sites than any other district in Belize.  In fact, more than 60 percent of Cayo district is wildlife sanctuary, national park, or preserve."

Eco-tourism is a ‘Green Revolution’

Antother Eco Kid essay for Chaa Creek's Eco Kid Summer Camp, this time from Alyssa Coleman.

"I want to be an Eco kid because as kids I think we can make a big difference just by the little things we do everyday.  In our country Belize we need to educate the people more about healthy, clean and Eco friendlier ways of living in order to have a beautiful Belize.  We as proud Belizeans should stand up and let people know the proper ways to dispose garbage and other waste.  We need to reuse, like reuse plastic bottles or old tires to plant different plants in.  Reduce, reducing the amount of electricity you use or water, instead of using an automobile walk or ride a bike."

Taking Care of Nature

Here's another feelgood Eco Kid essay for the Eco Kid Summer Camp at Chaa Creek.  Danielle Mohammed did a good job.

"It would be exciting for me to be able to go to this Eco Kids Camp because I know I will get to learn more about my environment, about different things we can do to take care of it.  I am also looking forward to do new things that I never knew or did at Camp Oakley, like going bird watching, horseback riding and getting to explore new adventures on the nature hikes.  I know I will also get to make new friends and the most exciting thing would be to travel and see a different part of my country."

Nova Scotia CC tourism students coming to Belize

Nova Scotia CC tourism students coming to Belize | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Tourism students coming to check out Belize.  We have a lot of tourism students here to show them around.  We assume that they'll be in Cayo for a lot of the trip since they "will get to take in all the local tourism attractions, visit a jaguar preserve and even stay a night in a Mayan home."  They sound excited.

"'Yeah, we’re going to come back tired and sore and dirty and stinky, but we’re going to be in a country for two full weeks – which is only a flash in the pan really,' said instructor Adam Rumsey, one of the leaders on the expedition. 'In that two weeks we’re going to see as much of their tourism industry as possible. That’s the key. Yes there’s some down time and yes there’s some beach time, and there’s some great experiences, but the whole thing is to experience their tourism industry and bring those experiences home.'

Belize is a burgeoning tourism destination that is about to explode, Rumsey said, with many cool sites to take in. What this group hopes to focus on is the eco-tourism."

Belize: Taking a Proactive Approach to EcoTourism and Awareness

Belize: Taking a Proactive Approach to EcoTourism and Awareness | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article about Eco-tourism in Belize.  "The town of Placencia, for example, has been turning away Belize’s dramatically increasing numbers of cruise ships, despite the money they bring. This is because they see the potential damage cruise ships cause to the local environment, and because cruise tourists who only spend a short time on land, could interfere with traditional tourism. The Placencia Tour Operators Association has fought against the Royal Caribbean cruise line to stop the “cruise exploitation” visits in the area."

Green luxury in the rainforest

Green luxury in the rainforest | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Meshak, one of Chaa Creek's best guides, gets mentioned in this article.

"The resort's Rainforest Medicine Trail was once the property of Don Elijio Panti, the last Maya shaman of Belize who died in 1996 at the age of 103.  It was when naturalist guide Meshak Elia took me there to learn about medicinal plants that I spotted the howlers in the trees alongside the river.

The copal tree, Meshak told me, was sacred to the Maya. They would collect and dry its sap, which was burned as ceremonial incense.  It was used by shamans to chase away bad spirits and attract good ones, and also as protection against the 'evil eye.'

That evening, I joined another small group Meshak was leading on the 'Creatures of the Night' tour.  Headlamp flashlights allowed us to pick our way down a path where, in addition to the hairy tarantula and the amorous toads, we also spotted a possum, leafcutter ants and several bats."

Eco-friendly Ways to Travel the Globe

Eco-friendly Ways to Travel the Globe | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek has 5 concepts for trying to be eco-friendly while traveling.

"In our fast-paced, material-heavy modern world, it can be difficult enough at home to live sustainably: Practicing environmental and ecological ethics on the road is sometimes that much tougher. There’s less under our control; we’re often beholden to local practice and custom about which we know little; and we may, like it or not, be part of a massive tourist horde, the impacts of which are substantial."

Number 2 deals with researching tour companies: "Research tour companies you might want to enlist for a leg of the trip, and choose those businesses that practice sound environmental and cultural practices."

In this article, they mention that 36% of land and 13% of Belize's water are protected areas.  They mention Belize's win over the cruise lines too.  They end with an eco-minded to do list for tourists visiting.    "While it is never easy to balance tourism with conservation, the small Central American country has long recognized that ignoring the latter means betraying the former."
