SHC Baldmiration Festivities

SHC Baldmiration Festivities | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Sacred Heart College had their Baldmiration yesterday morning.  Dr. Aird is sporting a new hairstyle, or lack thereof.  In fact, many students and faculty had some pink in their hair.  Check out the video to see the festivities.

SHC's Balmiration was a fund raiser for the cancer society, in solidarity with Mrs. Kim Simplis-Barrow, and her current fight with cancer.  Great job, SHC, and good luck to Mrs. Simplis-Barrow!

Here's another feelgood story.  UB's Baldmiration got an editor's note in Complexd Mabazine.  Will Moreno's photos were featured in the story.

"The University of Belize Baldmiration Campaign was inspired by Kim Barrow’s decision to not disguise her bald head and show the true and honest effects of cancer. Led by Lecturer Dr. Sylvana Udz who thought up a non-verbal way to show solidarity and support for cancer sufferers and survivors, students at the University of Belize shaved their heads bald or dyed streaks of their hair in a brave and bold attempt to raise public awareness about the effects of cancer and importance of getting regular check-ups."

Channel 7 has a good article on the Baldmiration.  They interview Ivorine Bulwer, Kim Simplis-Barrow, Dr. Silvaana Udz, Sister Mary Caritas, and Felinda Lauture about the event.

Ms. Simplis-Barrow said, "Bold, brave, wow, awesome are the words that I heard when the news spread of admiration. This initiative by Silvaana and the UB students have brought such great awareness and empowerment to women.  They say I'm an inspiration, but really, you all, the ones who are doing the balding are inspiring so many people."

UB Students Shave Their Heads for Cancer Awareness

UB Students Shave Their Heads for Cancer Awareness | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Feelgood news of the day!  We couldn't agree more.  Balmiration!  We wish Ms. Kim Simplis-Barrow a speedy recovery from her upcoming chemotherapy and surgery.

"The students believe that Mrs. Barrow has emerged as a powerful message of hope for person living with cancer, battling cancer, surviving cancer or who may yet have to face cancer.  In solidarity, seven female students and one UB female lecturer bravely and publicly shaved their heads and join the bold and beautiful look to support all women who have or may lose their hair.  Their message: it is okay to wear a wig if you’d like, but don’t feel you have to!  We love the bold look! In support of the female shavers, 15 male UB students went bald. Meanwhile, another 100 UB students and lecturers dyed streaks of their hair pink and other cancer-ribbon associated colors in support of family, friends or colleagues who have battled with the disease.  The hair streaking is a fundraising campaign being undertaken by Heather Jones of Jonze Unisex Salon in support of the Belize Cancer Society."
