Cayo Art Festival 2015

Cayo Art Festival 2015 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The SISE House of Culture celebrated their 5th anniversary with the Cayo Art Festival last Saturday at the Cayo Welcome Center.  Everyone had a great time, especially the kids: lots of clown fun was had.  There was great food, and lots of art for everyone to enjoy.  Happy anniversary, SISE HoC!

Crystal Paradise got some great shots of the art.

Caving Around Cayo

Caving Around Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo has the caves.  The article is actually called '5 things to do in Belize besides diving' but the first 2 they mention are what Cayo excels at.  Actun Chapat and ATM both get mentioned in the article.  How they missed Crystal Paradise, which is known for amazing birding, nobody knows.

"While neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala get all the press for Mayan sites, Belize was once the centre of the Mundo Maya.  At its peak, the Mayan civilization in Belize is said to have reached over a million people.  This means plenty of archaeological sites, some still buried under thick bush and, most fascinating of all, sacrificial caves now open to the public for supervised spelunking.  You can hop on the popular Actun Tunichil Muknal tour to view the skeletal remains of a young Maya girl, but there are also others worth exploring.  Arrange a visit to Actun Halal and Actun Chapat, in the western village of San Jose Succotz, through Belizean Sun Tours—there, your group will likely have the xibalba or Mayan underworld all to yourselves.

The Women in Arts Fair was Saturday at the Cayo Welcome Center.  Crystal Paradise got some good pictures of the event.

"San Ignacio had a special event over the weekend, it was the “Women’s Fair”.  Women from all over the country had the opportunity to share their work and at the same time we had the opportunity to buy some of their unique art pieces.  The San Ignacio Welcome Center was a colorful place to be shopping for handmade jewelry, hand died clothes, clay pots, weaved baskets, handmade aromatic soups, and different sized and colors t-shirts.  The event was organized by the San Ignacio House of Culture."

Black Hole Drop

One of Caves Branch's most amazing tours is their famous Black Hole Drop, where you rappel into a 300 foot deep cenote.  If you crave adventure in Cayo, this is for you.  Some of the best Cayo jungle lodges, including Crystal Paradise, Mariposa, and Parrot Nest, got to experience it so they could better answer their guest's questions about the unique adventure.

"Ian Anderson's Caves Branch Jungle Lodge offers one of the most extreme rappelling adventures in Belize with their Black Hole Drop.  It's around an hour hike to a huge cenote that you rappell 300 feet into.  You then have a delicious lunch, and explore the cenote.  There are caves in it too."
