GLOW Camp 2018

GLOW Camp 2018 | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

GLOW Camp has finished.  A huge thanks to the Peace Corps volunteers and everyone else that made this happen again this year!

"Peace Corps Belize extends our heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to our Girls Leading Our World (GLOW) Camp 2018! 80 girls (ages 10 – 13), 14 Belizean Counterparts and 12 Peace Corps Volunteers, from all over Belize, gathered for a week of learning and fun. The girls made friends from all over the country! They learned about cultures different from their own and developed their leadership skills by building their self-esteem, self-expression, and self-reliance. They also made crafts, danced, laughed and learned about self-defense! We are so proud of these girls for their full engagement in such a new experience. These girls worked so hard throughout the school year to prepare for the camp. Some engaged in fundraising activities for the trip while some even wrote application essays to attend.

Thank you to all the Peace Corps Volunteers who worked so hard writing grants, fundraising, preparing the girls for the camp and attending. Thank you to those Volunteers who were unable to make it but worked hard towards the camp. Thank you to the amazing counterparts for accompanying the girls and for taking the time out of their summer break to attend. A special thank you to those counterparts who brought girls to the camp even without a Peace Corps Volunteer. Thank you to the parents for allowing the girls to attend. We couldn’t forget to thank all the invited guests and trainers who took time out of their schedules to educate the girls on such important topics at their young age. Thank you to the cooks, the drivers, Peace Corps staff and everybody else who made GLOW Camp 2018 a huge success!

We can't wait to bring back all the information we learned to the rest of our GLOW clubs back home!"

Damon Russell got some good pictures too, as did Miriam, and Sera.

The Cayo Welcome Center got some good pictures.

Benque Market Ribbon Cutting

Benque Market Ribbon Cutting | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Benque Market is coming soon!  They had the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday with the mayor and other stakeholders.  Benque was chosen earlier this year to be Belize's next tourism destination, and for good reason.  It's wonderful seeing Benque, known for having a special culture all its own, get these much deserved projects.  They'll have permanent and temporary stalls for rent.  Call 803-2020 for more information.

"The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Benque Market was held yesterday at Corner of Wyatt & Kennedy Street!  The Mayor of Benque Viejo del Carmen, Miguel Velasquez cut the ribbon after introducing the market plan.  Some of people helping the Mayor to cut the ribbon were L-R His Excellency Mr. Said Badi Guerra, Ambassador of Belize, Mr. Recard Gongora, representing National Authorizing Office, Mayor Velasquez, Mr. David Sanfiel, Civil Engineer representing European Union and Mr. Subrata Basu, Peace Corps volunteer."

The Story Behind "Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey"

The Story Behind "Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

A Peace Corps Volunteer describes how 'Pat the Great Cat' came to be.  The book can be found at the Belize Zoo.

"The story of the publishing of the new book 'Pat the (Great)Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey' is a story of two women’s passion for literacy and learning.  It is also a story of collaboration between the people of Belize and the United States.  'Pat the (Great) Cat: A Jaguar’s Journey' is the result of an international literacy initiative that is joining children across the United States and Belize through the true story of a jaguar from Belize who found his world forever changed as people came to share his land...  Students from Belize and from urban Milwaukee, Wisconsin (ages 9-13), took on the task of creating international awareness through an extraordinary literacy journey that celebrates not only the jaguar but the importance of joining hands across nations to impact our natural world through education and friendship."
