Belize Offers Ocean 'Blue' Print with Debt-for-Reef Swap

Belize Offers Ocean 'Blue' Print with Debt-for-Reef Swap | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize will be one of the first countries to implement a debt relief strategy by preserving the reef.  Belize will increase its Biodiversity Protection Zones from the current 15.9% of ocean area to 30% by 2026, and in return, will have around $200 million of its debt paid off.  Great idea!

"Belize provided a likely 'blue' model for conserving some of the world's most vulnerable marine ecosystems on Friday, swapping a promise to protect the northern Hemisphere's biggest barrier reef for much-needed debt relief.

While urgent efforts to limit global warming are expected to see at least half a trillion dollars of 'green' bonds this year, 'blue' bonds are still in their infancy, despite estimates that oceans contribute around $3 trillion per year to global GDP."

Businessweek Broadcasts 'Buy Belize Bonds'

Businessweek Broadcasts 'Buy Belize Bonds' | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Businessweek has a good article out about Belize and the debt restructuring.  A lower interest rate would be nice.

"Barrow said he would pursue more lenient terms for the government after the interest rate on the notes rose to 8.5 percent this year from 6 percent as part of an accord reached with bondholders in 2007.  TCW says investors are overestimating the losses the country will seek to impose in any new agreement."

“If Belize can restructure in a pragmatic and open way that is friendly to investors and preserves access to the markets, it should only be a benefit for them.”
