We always mention the Iguana Hatchery: "A highly interpretive and educational exhibit has been designed within the Resort’s property in order to create a closer look at this amazing reptile, and to learn how vital they could be to the ecological balance of the river habitat."

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH

Iguanas and Termites at the SIRH | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The San Pedro Scoop came to Cayo to see the iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the SIRH.  They loved it, of course.

"Though you might not know it by just driving by, the San Ignacio Hotel Resort sits on quite a few acres of really beautiful jungle leading down to the Macal River. There are plenty of trails but you are going to want to get one of the hotel guides to lead you a 3 minute walk to the Green Iguana Project...

A very cool program initiated by the hotel to educate guests, Belizeans and especially children about this native animal and how they (especially the 'shes') need to be protected in the wild.  Green iguanas are purely vegetarian (unlike the more common 'Wish Willys' on Ambergris Caye) and considered good eats in Belize…they are often referred to as 'Bamboo Chicken'."

The Guardian's Travel Section Recommends Parrot Nest Lodge

The Guardian's Travel Section Recommends Parrot Nest Lodge | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

You don't see Cayo's smaller lodges get much press, but that is changing.  Parrot Nest Lodge, with the original treehouses in Belize, got mentioned, as did Tobacco Caye's Paradise Lodge, in The Guardian's travel tips for Central America.

"It's lucky iguanas don't snore or it would be a very noisy night's sleep in the trees.  The treehouses are snug, overlooking the Mopan river (great for swimming) and your tree will probably be visited by not just iguanas but also parrots and toucans.  Mayan ruins, San Ignacio town and the Cave of the Crystal Maiden are all close.  Best of all, this small lodge is run by an incredibly welcoming family."

Happy March to everyone!  Have you been to the Green Iguana Conservation Project yet this year?  The Iguana Hatchery is ranked the number one thing to do in San Ignacio proper, and for good reason.  Tabitha the iguana is in the picture.
