Eco Kids and Medicinal Plants

Eco Kids and Medicinal Plants | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Eco Kids learned about medicinal plants.

"Mrs Salome’s presentation on medicinal plants highlighted several popular Belizean herbs, such as serosee, thyme, and aloe vera, and allowed campers got to practice their bush medicine skills.  A couple lucky volunteers pretended to have earaches, and they were cured by using thyme.  From the excellent bedside manner displayed by some campers, it would seem there are some future doctors in the group!"

Ancient Maya Wisdom Key to Modern Health

Ancient Maya Wisdom Key to Modern Health | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Great article from Chaa Creek, highlighting Dr. Rosita Arvigo's work with Don Elijio Panti, and the Maya Winter Solstice celebrations.

"Rather than misinterpreting Maya beliefs to falsely predict the end of the world, researching and practicing ancient Maya medicine and natural healing techniques can open a new world of health today, noted author and Maya medicinal plant expert Dr. Rosita Arvigo advised participants at Chaa Creek’s 2012 Maya Winter Solstice celebrations.  Chaa Creek events coordinator Denise Duran said that Dr Arvigo’s presentation, 'Tales of a Maya Shaman' was one of the highlights of the Belizean eco resort’s week-long Maya cultural exposition surrounding the 2012 Maya Winter Solstice celebrations of December 21, 2012."

The Trumpet Tree - read all about it

The Trumpet Tree - read all about it | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Per Chaa Creek's site: "Today’s Belize Photo of the Day is the Trumpet Tree and its scientific name is Cecropia peltata. It is a tropical, fast growing tree, with a tall ungainly open habitat of growth, which is widely abundant in the tropical rainforest. The local name, Trumpet Tree, comes from a tradition of the Ancient Maya who used the stems to make ceremonial trumpets. The Trumpet Tree grows in Central and South America, the Caribbean and can range up to 20mm in height."

I think they mean 20 meters in height, or they're talking about a really small tree.
