Why Belizean Food Should Be On Every Culinary Enthusiast’s Radar

Why Belizean Food Should Be On Every Culinary Enthusiast’s Radar | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize is getting the recognition it deserves for being the foodie capital of the region.  Cayo has quite a few chef-owned restaurants, and is known for having some of the best food in the country.  Conde Nast Traveller just published a great article on culinary and cultural tourism around Cayo and Belize.  They interview Lyra Spang from Taste Belize in Placencia, and mention the San Antonio Women's Cooperative and Ka'ana.

"A nation famous for its archaeological sites, rainforests, and reefs is finally getting attention for its diverse and sustainable food scene...

In the Cayo District, home to popular archaeological sites like the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, the San Antonio Women’s Cooperative invites travelers to learn about the Yucatec Maya practices of farming according to moon cycles, and hand-grinding corn to make tortillas. Boutique hotels in the area are also employing Maya women from the community for hands-on experiences. At Ka’ana Resort in San Ignacio, guests can step inside a traditional-style Maya hut where sisters Amrita Cocum and Clarita de la Fuente lead cooking classes around a blazing fire hearth overlooking tropical gardens."

El Chile Cantina & Grill

El Chile Cantina & Grill | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The El Chile Cantina is having their grand opening this weekend.  They'll open tomorrow, and will have the UFC fight on Saturday night on their huge screen.

Pictures on fb.

"The new El Chile Cantina is gearing up for their grand opening next Friday and Saturday. They've done a complete refurbishment to the Kenny Gibbs steakhouse, adding one of the biggest palapas in Cayo for the cantina. Ornate painting abounds, Mr. Humes painted everything, down to the tiny cracks in the bricks. The lion and Maya are amazing. The garden area already feels jungly, and they're adding more plants this week.

On Saturday the 18th, they'll be projecting the McGregor - Cerrone UFC match on their massive screen, and 3 wide screen tv's. As the name implies, they'll have a wide menu of Mexican food, and they'll have a selection of infused tequilas too."

Fuego Opens Tomorrow

Fuego Bar and Grill opens tomorrow.  They released their menu recently, so you can tell they'll have a good selection, and be pretty affordable.

"Elevated 'Street Food' - farmer's market to table.  Our chefs utilize Belizean ingredients from the farmer's market next door and present it their way in a very comfortable and current setting.  Our mixologists tell their own stories with fresh fruit juice concoctments.  Choose from our music menu and enjoy downtown San Ignacio - it's people, shops and attractions."

AR B's Restaurant on Burns

Cayo has a new restaurant, and it's called AR B's.  They are located at the end of the walkable part of Burns avenue.  They have their menu done, and within the week should have everything listed for sale.  Their burritos are good, and they have good coffee too.

La Ixtapai at the Cahal Pech Resort

La Ixtapai at the Cahal Pech Resort | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

What a great review for La Ixtapai restaurant at Cahal Pech Resort.

"Jaya and I looked at each other, stunned by the soup.  The texture of the not-fully-blended vegetables, the special mix of exotic spices, the perfect balance of chicken or vegetable or secret stock to bring out all of the flavours.  I needed the recipe.  But first, I needed more soup."
