Wildlife Ambassador Program Belize

Video of the day.  The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has a great video out showing some of their wild patients over the years, and talking about the new Wildlife Ambassador Program.

"WAP’s Mission is to improve wildlife conflict response and reduce poaching, trafficking and trade by providing law enforcement and community with relevant tools and information.

BWRC Highlights of 2018: The Wildlife Ambassador program launch. Most of BWRC's patients are victims of wildlife traffic and human wildlife conflict. So in order to save more wildlife we need the help of community members and BWRC hopes to reach out with education to solve or avoid conflict. Thanks to WWF Russel E Train and Protected Areas Conservation Trust PACT as well as San Ignacio Resort Hotel for the support for the 1st Ambassador Workshop in October.

Contact us bzwildlifeclinic@gmail.com if you would like to become a wildlife ambassador in your community and learn more.

If you see a wild animal in trouble, or a wildlife species is "giving you trouble" call or WhatsApp our BWRC assistants for free advice at 615 5159 (or 632 3257)."

Pedro Cruz Paints Cayo Mural

Pedro Cruz Paints Cayo Mural | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Cayo Tour Guide Association has a great article out about their interview with Pedro Cruz, who painted the San Ignacio Town mural in front of the police station.  27 gallons of paint is what the amazing mural took.  Thanks, Mr. Cruz!

"On Sunday, I had the opportunity of taking a close-up view of Mr. Pedro Cruz’s mural.  It is an amazing art piece which features a collage of historical and wildlife images.  It was painted over the welcome sign in San Ignacio.  It has images of Cahal Pech, maya masks, and hieroglyphs, as well as wild animals found in the Belizean forests, such as the toucan, tapir, and jaguar.  Also depicted are iconic historical and patriotic images like the Belizean Flag, the classic 21 September 1981 emblem and the chicle farmers life.  It’s not only a mural; it is an experience, something that all Belizeans should see."

BWRC's Busy Baby Season

BWRC's Busy Baby Season | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has been keeping their interns busy lately with a huge influx of wildlife, most of which are babies.  Thanks, BWRC, for the huge amount of work you're doing to keep Belize wild.

"Wow, 9 rescued wild animals in 7 days mark a new record intake for us (the first 10 months we received on average one animal every 3 days, this week we surpassed one animal per day) and shows us that baby season is upon us (and that more people know about us...).  Thanks to our lovely new crew for jumping in and taking care of the babies!"

In related news, they've also been doing more Scarlet Macaw check-ups in the Chiquibul.

Belize Tops Wildlife Adventure List

Belize Tops Wildlife Adventure List | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Belize was listed first on the list of Best Wildlife Travel Adventures.  Of course, due to Cayo, where the wildlife is.  The picture is of the Twin Falls, taken from La Capitana pontoon boat on Lake Benque.

"Located on the northeastern coast of Central America, Belize is brimming with unique and exciting wildlife.  There are approximately 145 species of mammals, 139 species of reptiles and amphibians, and over 500 species of birds that call the Latin American country home.  Belize contains remarkable protected parks and coastal cays abundant with indigenous wildlife.  To see some of Belize’s rarest animals, such as Baird’s tapirs and scarlet macaws, a tour guide is required, but many exotic animals can be spotted all around the tropical paradise.  Swim with sharks and stingrays in the crystal-clear Caribbean waters, and make sure to visit the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is recognized internationally as the world’s first jaguar preserve."

BWRC Wild Spring Break

BWRC Wild Spring Break | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has a new video out that highlights the visit from the University of Florida veterinary school students.  The video shows them rehabilitating some wildlife, and then working with iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project.  It also has some spectacular video from their student trips to Xunantunich, where the dueling handstands are cool, and DuPlooy's, where they had a rush cliff diving.  Daniel Velazquez did a great job on this video.

"The Belize Wildlife and Referral Clinic hosted University of Florida vet school students for Spring Break 2013; Wildlife Medicine, Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Immobilization, the Experiencing the Cultures of Belize, and having lots and lots of fun!  All while learning and working in conservation in Belize!"

Wildlife in the Cayo District

Wildlife in the Cayo District | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Nice article with some great pictures about a Belize vacation, with 4 days in Cayo.  They really caught some spectacular shots of everything from basalisks to hummingbirds to owls.  They rave about how much they loved Pook's Hill the most.

"Of the four places we stayed on the trip, Pook’s Hill was undeniably my favorite and I think everyone else would agree.  The accommodations were excellent, the food extraordinary, and the owner and all of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and seemed thrilled to have us stay and enjoy their little place in paradise.  Wandering the grounds were a few prehistoric-looking Basilisk Lizards generally sunning themselves and waiting for flying insects, such as this male...  Another fascinating experience at Pook’s Hill was listening to a mating pair of Spectacled Owls calling to each other from their hidden perches near our cabanas at dusk, and one night spotting an immature sitting in a leafless tree, apparently not yet having learned the importance of leaves for concealing your presence."

Wildlife Workshop with Lucky Boy

Wildlife Workshop with Lucky Boy | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo recently had a wildlife workshop where veterinarians from Belize and Guatemala joined Forest Department officials and zoo staff, UB students and their instructor “Jaguar-Man” Dr. Bart Harmson, Birds Without Borders researchers, and noted jaguar researcher, Omar Figueroa.  They did a checkup on Lucky Boy, and he's doing great, and putting the weight back on faster than expected.

"The Lucky Boy exam indeed had a happy ending.  Friendships formed, medical information about our rescued jaguar we previously did not know was gained, and recommendations due to the veterinarian findings, are now being discussed, which will ensure an even happier life for this superb black jaguar.  Lucky Boy meets his Belize public for the first time, on grounds at the zoo, December 12th!"

Coffee with Conservationists - EP. 04 - The Belize Zoo (Part II)

Video of the day. Jamal from The Belize Zoo & Tropical Education Center answers some common questions. There are around 45 different species of animals at the zoo. If you're interested in wildlife conservation or the zoo, it's more than worth a watch.

"Coffee with Conservationists kicked off its first ever episode with The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center. The zoo, which acts as a sanctuary for the indigenous animals of Belize, had so much to share with us that we’ve created a special part two feature. In this episode, we dig deeper into the behind-the-scenes conservation work that goes beyond the friendly faces of the residents we see when we visit the zoo. To save wildlife, we must save wild habitats. Conservationist Program Manager Jamal Andrewin-Bohn tells us more and shares a message for aspiring conservationists.

Belize Wildlife Benefactor's Tour

Belize Wildlife Benefactor's Tour | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic has an excellent idea for sustainable conservation projects.  People can take a learning vacation that helps the local community.  They'll be doing their first one in January.

"How to find sustainable income sources for small wildlife conservation projects in developping countries?  We have been working and pondering for a few years...and we are exited to share that in January 2014 we will try something new: An 8 day high-end tour to experience and support amazing wildlife conservation efforts while enjoying the best of Belize. Not for credit, but for wildlife lovers and conservation minded individuals with the desire to travel with a purpose.  For those interested in an adventure, with 'creature comforts,' while contributing to wildlife conservation in Belize.  Please share this message and the flyer with your friends and family or others who might be interested in learning more about this?"

Crested Caracara Reserve

Crested Caracara Reserve | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing views of Cayo can be seen from the Crested Caracara Reserve, which is in Central Farm.  Definitely a great spot for a small party or meeting.  You can see for miles and miles, and even beyond Spanish Lookout from the deck of the palapa.  The San Ignacio Resort Hotel does bird watching tours there too.  http://www.sanignaciobelize.com/belize-birding-tours

"The Crested Caracara Reserve, behind Running W on the George Price highway, has some spectacular views.  They have trails up the mountain if you want to get some exercise while seeing a variety of wildlife."

The Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic had their appreciation party at the Soul Project this weekend. It's great to see how far the BWRC has come in the short time it's been working with Belizean wildlife.  Thanks, BWRC, for all you've done!

"We would like to say THANK YOU to our countless helpers, supporters, donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff! If you are around, today at The Soul Project - space for the creative arts, 3-6 pm join us for 'Volunteer Appreciation Tacos'!
Unfortunately our FB event got a bit lost on this page, some people did not get their invitation, many people are not in Belize or currently away, and it finally is raining!...(which is wonderful but tends to 'ground' people home)
But we hope to see some of you there!!!"

Belize Zoo Excursion Review

Belize Zoo Excursion Review | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo, along with cave tubing, are featured in another well written travel article.  The author really liked the witty signs that the zoo has all around.  It's a great place to have fun while learning about Belize's wildlife.

"The Belize Zoo is unique in that all of the animals are native to Belize, and are not fit to live in the wild – they’ve either been injured or abandoned or raised in captivity.  For example, some people think that ocelet kitties are cute and fun pets…and then the kitties turn into big cats and become more than they can handle.  So it’s part refuge/part educational facility.  The signs for the animals are all hand-painted and deliver messages to the public about the animals.  They work to dispel myths (such as harpy eagles do NOT eat human babies) and raise awareness about the environment and human-wildlife-environment interactions."

Animals People & Care

Daniel Velazquez has the trailer out for his new documentary entitled 'Animals People and Care.'  Now that's a cool trailer, and it has a funny twist to it.  The focus is the Belize Wildlife Referral Clinic, and Dr. Isabelle Paquet Durand's efforts at getting it to what it is today.

"a film about a Fragile like mother Earth awareness campaign, using creative media, to raise local and international support fund raising for animals in need, to win first prize in inspiration in action contest in order to open a wildlife care facility in Belize. this is a short 28 min.  documentary made from the short awareness films along with Richard and Carol foster wildlife footage."

Wild Conservation at the Belize Zoo

Wild Conservation at the Belize Zoo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Houston Zoo sent some volunteers down, and they have praise for the 'best little zoo in the world.'  They have some pictures of all the great signs at the Belize zoo, too.

"After flying into Belize City, our group of 22 students and 2 instructors drove some 47km west to the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center (which would serve as our main hub over the 10-day stay)...  We spent a considerable amount of time there, learning about their efforts to educate Belizeans about the rich wildlife diversity that is apparent in their country.  What struck me most were their signs.  All exhibit signs are hand-painted with quirky, sing-song like poems that encourage native Belizeans to learn more about, and take pride in their national animals.  Like, their national animal for example…the tapir.  How many people really know what a tapir is (outside the Zoo world), or where our tapirs come from?"
