Coca-Cola's 'Open Happiness' in Belize Exhibit

Coca-Cola's 'Open Happiness' in Belize Exhibit | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Coca-Cola is celebrating 50 years of bottling in Belize.  They invited 50, yes 50, artists to submit art with the theme, 'moments of happiness with Coca-Cola.'  Congratulations to Terryl Godoy for winning 1st place.  Channel 7 interviewed Mr. Godoy: "If you noticed in that painting, everything comes in naturally.  The 'bread and bun' on top of the little Coke sign, that's how they used to do it.  The little shop didn't have Coca Cola big on it; it said 'Daddy's', right?  That's how it used to be in the 60's and 70's, and I am painting from my mind - this painting doesn't exist - a lot of people wants to know what street that was.  Well, because it's so familiar, you can mistake it for one of those areas, but it's directly from my mind about how it used to be."

The Coca-Cola exhibit will be touring around Belize over the next 6 months.  They'll be having stops in Cayo, at the SISE House of Culture from August 3rd to August 20th, and Belmopan, at the George Price Center, from August 27th to September 14th.

Tag The Town: A Community Art Project | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

You've seen the new Myan mural downtown, the Vision Serpent.  Mr. Awe has taken his idea, and made something much bigger out of it.  They have plans for doing many more murals around Cayo.  Here are a ton of great pictures from some painting being done around San Ignacio and Benque.  Keep getting those young artists involved in this great cause.

One Day on Earth Trailer

The SISE House of Culture is doing their movie night on Earth Day...Earth Night.  They will be showing One Day on Earth, which is the first film ever shot in every country in the world on the same day.  Sounds like quite a project, and it must be quite diverse.

"ONE DAY ON EARTH creates a picture of humanity by recording a 24-hour period throughout every country in the world. We explore a greater diversity of perspectives than ever seen before on screen. We follow characters and events that evolve throughout the day, interspersed with expansive global montages that explore the progression of life from birth, to death, to birth again. In the end, despite unprecedented challenges and tragedies throughout the world, we are reminded that every day we are alive there is hope and a choice to see a better future together."

"Belize Explored"

"Belize Explored" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Interesting article on Belize, although one must wonder if the author has actually been since Eva's is now Flayva's, and has been for many years, and there isn't a Bullet Tree Inn.

"In San Ignacio, Eva’s Restaurant is the place to hook up, book adventures (tours), kick back, enjoy some ice-cold Belikins – the national beer of Belize – and chow down on some good food.  We enjoyed exploring Mayan ruins and pyramids, some dating to circa 900 B.C.  It’s amazing what they were able to build with Stone Age tools and technology.  Along the way to a canoe trip up the Macal River, we visited a butterfly farm, a museum, walked the rainforest Medicine Trail and saw howler monkeys squawking in the jungle canopy.  The canoe trip was an enjoyable drift/paddle on a meandering emerald river.

We caught a ride back to Belize City with the lovely lady who owns the Bullet Tree Inn where we’d been staying.  There, our cozy cabin on stilts with a private bath was just 100 feet from the Mopan River.  A wonderful place for a cool refreshing swim.  The Bullet Tree Inn also had a café that served tasty meals."

"Our Sojourn in San Ignacio"

"Our Sojourn in San Ignacio" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Cayo gets some more great press, and Casa Blanca gets a shout out.

"We had reservations for four nights at the Casa Blanca Guesthouse, right on the main street of San Ignacio, Burns Avenue.  (I liked this street before I even saw it because my maiden name is Burns!)  And it was a very convenient place to stay; we could walk to all the restaurants in town easily and down to the river nearby as well.  It was not a fancy place, but it was scrupulously clean, safe, air-conditioned (which kept the road noise down), and non-smoking; and had cable TV, daily maid service, and private baths.  And the price was right at $49 US per night.  From what we could see as we walked around, it was the nicest place to stay if you wished to be right in the heart of town, and we did, so we were pleased with our choice."

The Pandy Show is a 'giant in television'

The Pandy Show is a 'giant in television' | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

It's great to see The Pandy Show getting some national attention.

"You won’t find him on the Disney Channel or the Cartoon Network…and he’s yet to make it on Channel Five.  But that doesn’t stop Kent Pandy from being a giant in television…at least on Cayo’s S.E.N. TV.  News Five cameraman Brent Toombs spent an evening with the one man network at his studios high atop Cahal Pech."

Channel 5 interviews Kent Pandy.

"Originating from a make shift studio, on a hill overlooking San Ignacio, the Pandy Show hardly compares with other TV shows produced for children. There are no elaborate sets. There is no studio audience. And technically speaking, the broadcast is less than perfect. But still, the program is a huge hit with youngsters in the Cayo district for one reason; Kent Pandy. A man with enough enthusiasm, and heart, to pull off a weekly live television show entirely by himself."

"Down and Out in San Ignacio"

"Down and Out in San Ignacio" | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

This is a decent write up of Cayo.  But just 3 to 4 days?  Mountain Pine Ridge deserves that much.

"Hot spots such as Tikal (2 hrs), Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM, 1.5 hrs) and various eco-tourism have made San Ignacio a must see destination for anyone coming to Belize.  Granted they can steal themselves away from the coast for a couple days.  I would recommend 3-4 days here to really take advantage of the abundance of excursions, tours, and wanderings.  A sample of what can be had here is below.

Barton Cave Creek- canoeing through a couple of the local rivers.
Mountain Pine Ridge- Bumpy ride showing off a cave, waterfall and relaxing secluded swimming spot.
Actun Tunichil Muknal or ATM
Tikal Tour- See the famous Guatemalan Mayan Ruin
Spanish Lookout- Mennonite Village- yes, there is a thriving Mennonite community in Belize.
Horseback riding
Birdseeing tours"

The Belize Zoo visited Sacred Heart College.

The Belize Zoo visited Sacred Heart College. | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

The Belize Zoo talks about their event at Sacred Heart College, and World Tapir Day.

"Recent days have seen important messages shared with many, coming straight from the heart of The Belize Zoo. Education Officer, Jamal Andrewin, spent a day at the grand science fair event at Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio.  Besides showing an attractive display of his work involving the extremely rare harpy eagle, Jamal also had a colorful large poster showing the Central Biological Corridor, and some of the animals who call this important area their home.  Developed by the Forest Department, this same poster, featuring our gorgeous puma, 'Carlos', is always on display by our puma exhibit.

Jamal also gave a presentation to high school students, detailing some of the zoo’s important conservation work, which is soon to be 'out and about.'  His continued excitement about an idea he developed and is now taking to our top leaders in government was also brought to all’s attention.  The idea?  Every 27th of April is World Tapir Day.  Brought forward by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and the Tapir Specialist Group, the objective of World Tapir Day is to see that this bit of recognition assists in heightening awareness about all four extant species of tapirs."

Voluntourism is huge in Cayo

Voluntourism is huge in Cayo | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Voluntourism is a huge moneymaker in Cayo, and Belize in general.  If someone had a good channel of communication, they could really make a fortune.  $800usd for 2 weeks, which covers a dormatory stay(not a hotel), and a few meals a week.  You'd think that would cover the bus.  Paying to volunteer 6 hours a day...

"Belize reports a high enrollment rate at primary school level (Girls 95.9, Boys 94.6) suggesting a significant level of achievement. However, there are a number of challenges related to quality and disparity that must be addressed."

Ka'ana gets a great review...and has new pool villas

Ka'ana gets a great review...and has new pool villas | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Ka'ana has 2 new villas, and they have private pools!  They got an amazing write up too.

"In fact, the name means “heavenly place” in Mayan, and this 15-room, two-villa eco-resort is nothing short of extraordinary. In a lush valley between the Maya Mountains of the Cayo District, the property embodies the spirit of the Mayan natives, utilizing all locally sourced materials, serving food grown in their organic garden (all gourmet and spectacular, of course!), and embracing the aesthetics of the rich native culture. Belize’s natural wonders blend seamlessly with the Hannan brothers’ knack for luxury, as guests are equally encouraged to explore the surroundings and enjoy special touches, such as Western Belize’s largest wine cellar."
