Ford Looks to Make its Cars Easier to Recycle with Gecko Inspired Adhesive

Ford Looks to Make its Cars Easier to Recycle with Gecko Inspired Adhesive | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

"Dearborn, Michigan based car maker, Ford Motor Company, is working with Procter & Gamble to develop an adhesive inspired by geckos to improve the recyclability of its cars. Ford said that its researchers have considered ways to make auto manufacturing more sustainable for years. A key challenge is glue used to adhere foams to plastics and metals can make disassembling parts for recycling nearly impossible.

Enter the gecko. The company explained that the lizard’s toe pads allow it to stick to most surfaces without liquids or surface tension. The reptile can then easily release itself, leaving no residue.  [...] According to Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader for plastics and sustainability research, the gecko could inspire a host of adhesive innovations for global applications at Ford."

Autodesk Gallery Exhibits Mercedes-Benz Biome Car

"A concept car like no other, the Biome is made from an ultra-lightweight biological material that is grown from a seed. With a weight restriction of 1,000 pounds and just a month for design, Mercedes-Benz turned to biomimicry and the symbiotic relationships of nature for inspiration. The Biome is made from a biological material, BioFibre, uses bioluminescence for headlights, releases pure oxygen as it operates, and becomes a seamless part of the ecosystem."

Memo to Carmakers: This Fish Is a Bad Model

Memo to Carmakers: This Fish Is a Bad Model | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

"In 2005, Mercedes-Benz revealed a concept car with a strange shape. Called the Bionic, the cartoonishly snub-nosed vehicle was modeled after Ostracion cubicus, the yellow boxfish. Car manufacturers aren’t the only ones to take inspiration from this weird coral dweller. But researchers now say engineers who mimicked the boxfish might have been misled."

A Closer Look At Twin’z, Renault’s Trippy Nature Car

A Closer Look At Twin’z, Renault’s Trippy Nature Car | Biomimicry | Scoop.it

"Salone del Mobile, the annual Milanese furniture fair, is as for designers as it is for brands struggling to associate themselves with design in general--as evinced by the slew of events and unveilings that are only peripherally related to design. For example, today the French automaker Renault unveiled their much-hyped new concept car, the Twin’z, which was designed by the Welsh biomimicry guru Ross Lovegrove. “The aim was to break down the boundaries between the world of an object whose calling is to be in movement--the automobile--and that of furniture,” the carmaker explains in their release."
