Since January we have facilitated a handful of iBooks Author workshops with educators at regional technology events all over California, as well as the Computer Using Educators (CUE) conference in Palm Springs. These workshops have included teachers and administrators engaged in discussions about how to leverage Apple's new software in education. Based upon these experiences, we have identified seven reasons why you should consider adding iBooks Author to your knowledge base.

Enhanced ebooks (ePUB3) are a new digital publication standard that allows easy integration of video, audio, and interactivity. I expect this format to advance the future of textbooks and other educational material. Future textbooks might be able to “read themselves” with audio narration, perhaps preventing students from actually reading. But the benefits outweigh the downsides; for example, the new text books might also offer the ability to make and share annotations without destroying the book, interactive self-tests throughout the chapters, and generally a much more enjoyable learning experience.

But technology is only as good as the system it’s applied to. Much like a fresh coat of paint will not improve the fuel efficiency of a ’69 Mustang, the application of technology to a broken system masks deeper problems with short-term gains.

What is instructional design?

Instructional design is the process of identifying the skills, knowledge, information and attitude gaps of a targeted audience and creating or selecting learning experiences that close this gap, based on instructional theory and best practices from the field. Ideally, workplace learning improves employee productivity and value and enhances self-directed learning. As social media technologies for learning become increasingly important to organizations and to individuals, instructional designers will need to focus on broad learning events and strategies that incorporate many approaches rather than on individual courses.

"Many public schools are running to implement blended learning out of the belief that it will save them money. In this time of bleak budgets, who can blame them? Schools need to do whatever they can to continue to operate and provide a decent education for their students. State policymakers are similarly attracted to the notion of blended learning. Many eagerly wonder how much blended learning costs so that they can begin to reap some true savings from their education budgets for the other pressing obligations that are bearing down on state governments. And then the question arrives. How much does blended learning cost?"
