When in 2004 the Dance Theatre of Harlem was forced to take a hiatus from performing, 35 years after its founding, the news reverberated through arts communities and dance companies like the rolling shocks of a small earthquake.

The reasons were common enough for a nonprofit arts organization: financial woes in the form of a $2.3 million debt. But the shutdown of the performing company left a huge void in the dance world. The company did continue to operate its school.
