The real reasons that women are oppressed by patriarchy

The real reasons that women are oppressed by patriarchy | Box of delight | Scoop.it
I’m starting to realise that women are oppressed because they are more powerful than men.

I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but consider that all oppression has a reason or a motivation. It all starts somewhere. Oppressors would not seek to control, denigrate and silence people who had no power in the first place, would they?

Men don’t oppress women because they think they are stupid, incompetent, weak or incapable – they oppress women because they know that we aren’t any of those things. They know that given the chance, we will change the world in several ways which will permanently dismantle male supremacy. And they don’t want that.

5 ways we are encouraged to blame women and girls for being raped and abused

5 ways we are encouraged to blame women and girls for being raped and abused | Box of delight | Scoop.it

Content warning: This article discusses sexual violence against women and girls and the ways they are blamed for being victims of male violence

Having spent 10 years working with women and girls subjected to sexual and domestic violence of all kinds, I have never had a case or a caseload in which the woman or girl was not being blamed for what someone else (usually a man) was doing to her. Sometimes she is blamed by her family, sometimes by her partner. Sometimes she is blamed by police or by social workers. Sometimes it’s the mental health team blaming her.

The Paula Principle: How and Why Women Work Below their Level of Competence, by Tom Schuller

The Paula Principle: How and Why Women Work Below their Level of Competence, by Tom Schuller | Box of delight | Scoop.it
How does gender impact on working life? In The Paula Principle, education scholar Tom Schuller focuses on women and what holds them back. It’s ironic that this book’s author is a man; it can’t help but jar that this subject is being viewed from a position of privilege – women’s first-hand stories have historically been silenced, especially those of the working class and the marginalised. That said, Schuller’s own working life has shown a strong commitment to expanding learning opportunities for everyone, at any age, and his passion for social justice is stamped on every page of a study whose clarity and well researched insights are captivating.

Learning Technologies: On being a woman in technology | Sharon Flynn

Learning Technologies: On being a woman in technology | Sharon Flynn | Box of delight | Scoop.it

Yesterday was International Women's Day and there was a plethora of blog posts and twitter messages identifying various inspirational women. Twenty five years ago I would have found this unnecessary, demeaning even. But now, with a pre-teenage daughter about to enter secondary school, with her whole life ahead of her, I'm increasingly concerned about the world that she is about to encounter.

Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

A thoughtful blog indeed - a real catch-22 situation re role model and women. Thanks for putting it out there.

It is not that Black women have not been and are not strong; it is simply that this is only a part of our story, a dimension, just as the suffering is another dimension—one that has been most unnoticed and unattended to. —bell hooks, Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black

The MMIWG Report, Genocide and Epistemic Injustice –

The MMIWG Report, Genocide and Epistemic Injustice – | Box of delight | Scoop.it

For many decades, Indigenous communities in both Canada and the United States have been reporting extraordinarily high rates of missing and murdered women and girls, reports which were generally greeted with indifference by police, the media or politicians. In late 2016, the federal government of Canada announced the creation of the National Inquiry into Missing Women and Girls, which went on to hold 24 hearings across the country to listen to the stories of women and their families. The scale and severity of the crimes being committed was horrifically illustrated by the fact that, by the time the Inquiry’s report was completed nearly three years later, an additional 130 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls were reported.

Reality Check: Do office queen bees exist? | Box of delight | Scoop.it
"Women leaders are role models and mentors to other women and girls."

That was the claim made in a recent Deloitte study looking at the number of women in leadership roles around the world.

But what if the opposite was true?

Instead of acting as mentors could successful female bosses be pulling up the ladder behind them because they perceive other women as a threat?

This is the theory known as queen bee syndrome.

Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified

Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualified | Box of delight | Scoop.it
It’s not because they lack confidence

You’ve probably heard the following statistic: Men apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% of them.

The finding comes from a Hewlett Packard internal report, and has been quoted inLean In, The Confidence Code and dozens of articles. It’s usually invoked as evidence that women need more confidence. As one Forbes article put it, “Men are confident about their ability at 60%, but women don’t feel confident until they’ve checked off each item on the list.” The advice: women need to have more faith in themselves.
